It was an accessory. Someone may have swapped the radio out with one that came from a car equipped for a rear speaker. A lot of things can get changed over 60 years.

That's wierd, no rear speakers just the one in dash.

It is a rear seat speaker fader control. Looks to be a factory installed assembly, kind of a rare to see an original.
