A friend just sent me an advertisement for the upcoming Ford Carlisle Show in PA this June.

The centerpiece for me will be the gathering of E and F Fords and 'Birds, BUT there will be other interesting vehicles to look at, too, like John Harding's (Oldmics) '57 Merc with its dual quad equipped 368 engine.

Anyone know why that car at Carlisle was called an "F" code? it clearly has a VS57 on it... wonder where the original VR unit is sitting if the original owner did indeed purchase an F code engined Tbird just to put the motor in this sedan. Interesting to say the least.

Car is called an "F" code to get your attention, you can always lie a little bit in advertising.    

Dan.  The reference to C, D, E, and F code '57 Ford cars refers to the vehicle I.D. or serial number.  C code cars had a serial number that started with a large letter C.  The C indicated that the engine was a 292.  D code cars were a 312 with a single four barrel carb.  E code cars were 312s with the dual quad set-ups.  F code cars were 312s with the supercharger set-up.  The 'interesting' cars to some were the early D code cars (passenger cars or t-'birds) that had the phase one superchargers installed at the factory before Ford began the use of the F in the data plate serial number.  Randy Holmes' dad ordered a '57 Ford 300 with the supercharged engine.  Randy is a Forum member here.  His handle here is randyh.  Randy's car is referred to as a 'D/F' car.  The serial number for the vehicle is 'D' plus the production number, but the paperwork shows that the supercharged was the factory installed option.  Randy's '57 is early in the pictures from the June 1,2,3,4 day event.  It's the bright all red '57 300.  It looked terrific.  Unfortunately, I did not see Randy with his car during the time I was there.  It is a beautiful restoration of his dad's car . . .

The "F" engine code was first used to denote the supercharged engine option late in the day of April 16,1957 for both the Ford cars and Thunderbird. On April 15, and 16 there were 16 "D" supercharged Thunderbird's and a unknown number of "D" supercharged Ford cars built. 

Charlie, Sorry I missed you, thanks for the nice comments on my father's car, has been a real labor of love to get it where it now is.
The Phase 1 supercharged cars that have a D code in the vin were all built in January '57 so that that engine could be raced at Daytona in February. They produced 15 thunderbirds, 65 Customs and 20 Fairlane convertibles with the Phase 1 supercharged engine. I believe 4 of these Thunderbirds were at Carlisle. 8 or 9 or these thunderbirds are known to exist. 4 of the Customs are known and possibly 1 convertible.
The F vin code was started with the production supercharged cars with what is referred to as the phase 2 supecharger.
