Wonder if I should replace my points in my 1957 312 with a PerTronix Kit. I have done it before on a different car/engine and liked it.
At Summit Racing they offer this:
- The Ignitor I P/N 1261 for $78.97 or - The Ignitor II P/N 91261 for $118.97 - Plus the Flame Thrower coil P/N 40511 for $35.97
Not sure if I should use the I or the II.

The II has a lot of improved features. I switched from the I to a II last year and with just everyday driving I don't see any improvement that I can feel.

The II is better on paper. If your distributor is worn out, then you will probably notice an improvement with either because the magnetic pickup is more forgiving than mechanical points. If your distributor is recently rebuilt, then you probably won't notice any difference over points - that was my experience.

I agree with that, neither the I or II made any difference in performance/mileage over a good set of properly adjusted points.

To me a big advantage is that you never have to adjust, file, or replace points again. I am planing on switching my old Series I with a new Series III because it has a built in rev limiter and I really need one. Missed a shift once and spun a rod bearing. Hate it when that happens.

The difference between 1 and 11 is that 11 will not burn out if you leave the key "on" with the engine not running. that was one of the "Negatives" with the Original Pertronix Kits. Leave the Key in the "Run" position on while working on the Car and Engine NOT running and it would burn out very quickly. My understanding is that 111 is a more "performance" oriented Unit. Not really needed for a more or less Stock Engine.

The II's key on protection is not flawless, because mine stopped working just after I had left the key on..

Considering that it' likely that most of our collector cars are not driven daily, complaints about changing the points once in a while, seem a bit over board..

Its not a big deal but in my old age the less routine maintanence I have to do the better. Not driving much can be a problem with points. They can corode if the car sits for a long time.

still think conversion to fords dura spark 2 is cheap and works very well. its on my 57 ranchero 2years ago,improvements where noticeable,and no issues. as well for the timing retard on start option for high comp ys. presently installing dura 2 in 48merc(292y). need info i can send some when i get home in march
