I would think anyone willing to go to all the trouble a 6-to-12V/pos-to-neg grd. conversion involves because they want to add a lot of accessories, should likely just go ahead and install an alternator also. P.S. I built myself a small converter box (black plastic & aluminum project/kit part from Radio Shack) that I keep in the trunk and can pull out & Velcro to the carpet (up under the dash on the trans. hump) when I need to use my 12V cell charger, GPS nav. device, etc. It has a short cord that plugs into the lighter socket, and another socket in the box. The inexpensive voltage/polarity transformer component is available from some of the T-Bird parts suppliers, and the other wiring/hardware is straightforward.

Thank you to you guys, it is true that for now I am in 6v, I just reload the car, but all my friends in US 50 year passes all pass in 12v and to troubleshoot it is easier. At first I wanted to stay in 6v and matching number but for the comfort and worries meme just to start with another car but suddenly the choice of the kit pertronix with the particularity of the positive ground for my model 54 disturbs me !! Thanks to you guys you are top !!

I disagree with Lou. If you are going to a modified car, 12 volt negative ground is the way to go. You can use all modern items (air, better sound systems, etc) if you want to. I never heard of anyone regretting going to 12 volt, which is the standard of the industry. 12 volt cars require less amperage to run accessories, and to me that is a safety factor.
My 54 is 12 volt. No problems.

Changing 6 volts to 12 volts is not a smart move , not only from a resale value standpoint but from a running and driving point. 6 volts systems have 300 amps where 12 have 150 amps, I seen more than several 6 to 12 conversions that had trouble starting in damp weather, or the had misfires and poorer gas mileage. That said I can really see no advantage other than making making payroll for my local auto electric shop If you want to add 12 volt accessories to a 6 volt car all you need is a $21.00 radio shack rectifier.

I don't think You need to change the Headlight Switch.Just the Bulbs.The Wiring will handle the 12 Volts no problem if its in good Condition. Others on this Site will know what else needs to be changed as this is a common change to these Cars. I did my 53 Ford in the early 80's. Can't remember everything I changed.

If You are going to the trouble of converting to 12 Volt change it to Negative Ground. If you are changing Starter, Generator, Regulator, and other Electrical Items like Bulbs etc You simply need to change the Battery from + Ground to - Ground. Even the original Radio will work with a proper Voltage Drop Regulator down to 6 Volts. Radio works on + or - Ground.

I have a question about the ignition of my Ford 1954 Customline in 6v with positive ground, I will like to go to 12v and so always in positive ground, I found 2 kit Pertronix and I would like to have your opinion because the special Yblock Is for the negative ground .. of the blow I do not think it is good ?!
