Good morning everyone,

This is my first post but I have been following this forum for more than a year. I have a '64 Ford F-250 with a stock 292. Has the usual Y-Block problems, passenger rocker oiling problems, leaking main seal etc. Has almost 120K original miles with no rebuild. I fixed all of the ancillary items (recored radiator, tune-up, new water pump, hoses, rebuilt carb, gauges, radio) and now I am at the point where I want to pull the engine and get her rebuilt. I have the rams horn exhaust added with fresh duals. Also have the Mummert alternator conversion bracket but need to wire it up. Will do the 3-wire version.

This truck is a combination work truck with the occasional date night thrown in. I want to update/mod this motor a little bit but don't want to go too nuts. I was thinking along these lines:

Mild overbore
Mild Street cam
Mummert 4-barrel intake
Either a Holley or Edelbrock 600 CFM man choke carb

I would like to retain the original air cleaner. I really like that trick Mummert Timing chain cover as well. I used to live a stones throw from Ted Eaton's place. Now I live a stones throw from Mummert's shop (been there a couple of times already) thank goodness. It would be nice to maybe get 250HP or so out of her. I am going to keep the stock 3-speed manual trans.

Is there any advice y'all could throw my way in doing this build? I am new to y-blocks although cut my teeth on Small block and FE Block Fords.

For your goals, a 1957 spec'd engine should work great but you will have to acquire some different heads.  A '57 292 with a 4v, rams horns, an better than factory attention to detail during assembly should get you close to that 250hp mark.  Zero deck the block to increase compression slightly, no matter which heads you use.  Use domed pistons if you use lower compression heads.  Rebuild or replace and tune the distributor.  That's all I would recommend on top of what you have already listed.

Just about everything you have learned with small blocks and FEs tranfers over to a Y.  They respond in the same way to the same modifications.  Apply those lessons to the build and you will have a fine Y.

What type of heads would I be looking to find? I know there are a couple versions. The aluminum heads are not really appropriate I don't think for this, as I could not begin to maximize their performance with this old truck.

Thanks

AS far as iron heads go, ECZ-G or 5752-113 are the heads you want for best performance.  The aluminum heads would be a significant waste of money for your stated target of 250hp.  However, they don't care what vehicle they are in so you absolutely can maximize performance in a truck with them.  If you think you may want more than 300hp, then aluminum is the way to go.

The heads that should be on the '64 engine will be adequate for street use but you will want more compression and you will leave a little on the table vs the G or 113 heads.

Here's the link to John Mummert's head chart, if you haven't seen it. Gives the cc's, valve sizes etc. with the casting numbers. He's got a page on porting, also. A good set of heads, good vavle job, and some simple port matching to the intake and exhaust will probably do the job just fine.

You didn't say if you want it  to look stock or not?  For a mild hop up, what's been suggested is fine, however a Mummert intake does not look stock if that matters?. A stock looking intake for a 4 barrel would be a 1957-ECZ-...B  , which can even be altered somewhat to improve performance. Or a Blue Thunder aluminum intake which can be painted if wanted.  Mummert's site (links from here) also lists several cams for Y-Blocks. Something like the 265 S mite work well in a lite truck. Or a bit milder cam but beyond your existing truck's would be the original 1957 car cam from Oregon cams, Vancouver Washington. about $150.00..just some ideas.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I totally forgot about the Mummert head comparo page. Stock look is not all that crucial, but I was curious as to the intake I would need if I choose to go that route. I was thinking that those OEM Ford intakes would perform better with a vintage carb vs. a new Holley or Edelbrock. I want this truck to perform a bit better but reliability is most important.  3 x 2 barrel is out. Too much hassle for me but I agree it looks cool. Will probably go for the "rat rod" look, but with a stellar engine bay.

Goal is to have the motor done by spring of 2017. Want to have all the parts sourcing done by the end of this year.

Thanks again so much!

Yes, the 265S is what I was thinking.

Thanks!

Just to clarify, the ECZ- - B intake came out in 1957, so it was designed for the later carbs. Keep in mind that to get proper performance, will require a 1957 up distributor also..
