Hey guys, I don't post much here but I have a dilemma.

I have a 1955 Ford 292/3 speed on the column. When I bought the car, the pedal travel was ll the way at the top of the stroke and I thought it just needed a new disc. I bought a disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing. When I pulled it apart, I noticed the grease was all over the inside of the bellhousing. The throwout bearing was dry and rattling. I inspected the flywheel and it was smooth and free from hot spots or grooves etc. The PP has some pretty harsh grooves so, I though I had found the reason they had it adjusted out so far.

So I change the said parts and now it chatters like a big dog. It had a very slight chatter before, but man it is really pronounced now.

I have had a few suggestions over on the hamb and I have checked them out. Nothing glaring that I see.

Today I went out and tried to slip the clutch a bit to "burn it in" from the advice of the local clutch rebuilder shop. During this process, I noticed if I set the parking brake and slip the clutch it doesn't chatter. So, could the problem be excessive lash or clearance in the rear end? I was hoping to drive this to Texas next weekend, so here I am , hat in hand, asking for help.

You made no mention of the pilot bearing/bushing  in the end of the crankshaft if it has excessive wear you will get some chatter 

Or, the flywheel needs to be surfaced

I have learned the hard to resurface the flywheel, I had the same thing with my 53 Victoria, also make sure the throw out  bearing is installed the whole way into the holder, had that also.
