It will be about 1.5 degrees off at the 40 degree mark.

If you know what your current initial and mechanical advance is, just set your initial, rev the engine until mechanical is all in and note your new number.  So if you know you have 38 degrees and the new tape indicates 39 or 37, simply write down somewhere that 37= 38 with the timing tape.

Long or short, if put on from TDC how far off could you be in the first 40* before TDC which all you need to see with a light. GOOD LUCK.

On my 312 I used a small block Ford (6 3/8 I believe) as it was only slightly longer that the Y.  I figure it can only be off 2-3 degrees and I can account for that.  Plus the fact that after initial set up, I adjust it any way by ear.

There is a scrub tape that is 6 inches which would work if the diameter is 6 3/16

Thanks Brodie. I remembered Ted equation after I posted my last question. I think I have enough info to make me fairly dangerous now. Thanks again.

Do the math. 1 degree on a 6.1875" balancer = .054".

Ok. I double checked a loose one I forgot I had. 6 3/16". Next question. Will the 6" timing tape work OK or will it be off too much to get an accurate setting. The only mark visable on my dampner is the TDC mark.

What diameter is our dampners? I tried to measure mine on the engine in the car with calipers and came up with 6.375. Is this right? It was pretty tight in there and wasn't sure I got it. I was going to put the timing tape on but wanted to be sure I had the right diameter.
