Hi all. Finally got my 312 sleeved and its a top job :-)  . Now need to order everything to put it back together. My old cam was an edb and was going to replace it with a mummert Y265-s, only thing is he hasn't got any. Not looking for performance really just closest to original spec. Has anybody used the Isky E4, and which valve springs would you recommend?
Probably should also add that I intend to use standard pistons, I have the ford 4 barrel intake with a holley 390cfm carb and pertronix ignition.

The E4 is a 40 old design, however it's still ok, just not as good as can be.

Call Howards Cams they have current grinds, however I prefer to support John Mummert, watch the deck height (important) most rebuilt engines I see end up with over .070 (not good) Ford calls for .010 (min) in the hole with a steel gasket.

Thanks for the tip on height.  Yes, I prefer to buy from Mummert but I spoke to him yesterday and he cant get camshafts at the moment. He doesn't know when he will be able to get stock again. Going to buy rest of parts from John but looks like I will need to get cam from somewhere else. Thanks for the help.

I've been using the E4 in my 292 for two years and have been happy. Similar set up as yours, 292, 390 Holley, Pertronix..
I don't race it, it's a daily driver.  It idles good, and performs good for the lower rpm range, my car rarely sees over 3000 rpm, I only occasionally stick my foot in it to open the secondaries.

Are you just replacing the edb cam as part of the rebuild or because you definately want a bit more performance?  Reason for asking is, that while the 1957 edb grind isn't available from most cam suppliers, including Mummert, it is from Oregon Cams in Vancouver Washington. They can grind it from a brand new core or as a regrind. Last year their price for a new one was about $149.00.. Lifters are of course extra.

the57 ford merc 312 grind which was quoted is avail. in vancouver canada, colt cams or shadbolt cams, regrind is 150 canadian,he also will reface lifters. i have used shadbolt for years with (never a failure),most of the cams wher 3208 cat truck engine (flat tappet).  colt cams have better access as they ar close to the us border. i have some nice cores i could trade for yours that would speed up the turnaround.my cores are groved for rocker lube.colt refaces lifters as well.colt cames alsodoes dodge cummins cams with his own blanks, cast in the us to ther spec. if you live near the west border email me will get you phone #s. colt will work best as he ships a lot to the us. cliff ct1940@shaw.ca

There are a lot of things to consider when building for towing.
How much does the caravan weigh?
What trans and rear gears?
What speeds and RPM will it be running at? Is it going 60 mph on the flat road or 30 mph climbing mountain grades, etc, etc. Good luck..

Thanks for the reply Paul. Im just replacing the cam as part of a full rebuild. The old cam is pitted and worn. Not really seeking performance just looking for a close to original spec cam.

Thanks Meteor, unfortunately I live in the UK, it gets expensive posting bits about all over the world. I just want a cam that's close enough to stock.
Yeah 57ranchero, I have been towing with this car for 12 years, it pulls the caravan no problem. I only pulled the engine because I was having radiator problems, too much pressure kept splitting the top tank of the rad, suspected a head gasket but in fact one of the heads was cracked. Thought I'd give the motor a refresh but found it was 80 thou overbored, badly scored cylinders which looks like a previous seizure and had just had new pistons donked in. Only half the valves were seating, the cam was worn out and had a crack in one cylinder, fortunately it was radial and not into the water jacket, it was at the head bolt side of the bore, looks like its had a wristpin escape in the past and badly damaged the cylinder wall. We have repaired the crack and sleeved the block back to standard.
