I leaks, I was just going to buy one from Mummert that is ready to go no modifications, the question I have is will the seal area on the crank that is crosshatched need to be polished down or not to use the neoprene seal?

Anyhow, I did the 318 NoPar rear seal mod on my 312 as per Walt Knuckles instructions on the web. I offset the seal ends about 5/16".  I did not use the side seals and nails however. I filled those areas with Permatex  Ultra Black. No more leak! I paid $5 something for the seal and trimmed it with my old Barlow pocket knife. It was no big deal!

As luck would have it, I talked to John and ordered a rear main seal for my 312 today. I had one of the Best Gasket "Orange" seals that failed. He said that was a different compound, and just didn't work. They wore quickly. There's been some post here by Ted along those lines. John mentioned modifying the C 318 seal, but felt the new Best Gasket worked as well and was less hassle. So that's what I ordered. I'm tired of cleaning the leaking oil out of the belly pan on the roadster.

Having done two stroker motors, 3 cams, and three sets of heads (including the aluminum ones), and who knows how many minor parts, I trust him. I've known John for close to 15 years, been in his old shop, and always been happy with the product and service.



Talk to him about the finish, he'll give you the straight story.

There are or were two later design rear crank seals available for 312s from the Best Gasket Co. One is neoprene (?) rubber & the other is a later design rope seal, replacing the now largely unavailable asbestos based seals. (the name of the materials used in the newer rope seal escapes me at the moment!) Apparently the rubber seals can work well.. if the casting area is in good shape, but some 312 castings aren't. In some cases it's apparently better to use the later rope seal.  Maybe someone on this site with experience with both seals can steer you on this? And both seals may be available thru Mummert.

If it's not leaking don't touch it, if it is, I like a 318 Chrysler seal, it fits nice with a little work, I have one in my Bird for over 20 years and it's fine (312CID).

anyone replaced a rope seal for a neoprene rear main seal on a stock unpolished 312 crank?  Got the engine out for a trans change and thought I might change the rear main seal also.
