Usually gas tanks have a zinc coating to prevent rust. Your new one should be this way. It usually lasts quite a while but not forever. You can paint it with something like silver Rustoleum or the paint mentioned above. Actually, you could paint it any color you like.

I got a can of Eastwood's galvanized finish for mine. It looks close to bare metal but has paint so it won't surface rust. I think the tanks left the factory bare metal. Chuck

Gentlemen, I'm replacing the gas tank with a new one on my 1956 Mercury Montclair. What is the original paint color for it? The new one is a silver color. How about the mounting straps , semi gloss black? TY in advance.
