Can anyone explain this? I've watched McCullouch's on EBAY for years and never seen one bid this high. And it didn't hit the reserve. It appears to be a regular OVS-57. What am I missing? Should I start selling while the price is insane? Chuck http://www.ebay.com/itm/262201051088?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Hard to say what people are thinking. After sitting for 40 years on a shelf, the unit will probably need a complete rebuild anyway. Maybe because it "looks" very complete and original?? Rono

Good question. Back in 77, I was moving and decided to unload some old parts. A friend of my uncle's was a Studebaker restoration guy, national status. I had a unit like that one, all the brackets, pulley, tension arm, etc. He came up to look at it, pulled out his reference material, serial numbers, etc. he said it probably wasn't the one off the Golden Hawk he was restoring, but close enough it could have been. I'd paid $150 a couple years before, and sold it for that. He was very upfront that he'd pay more, and could well afford it. I turned him down, and got a couple pictures of the final restoration a year later.
So I guess if you know what you're looking for, have an application, and a lot of money, prices will vary. I think most likely it's a bubble, someone thinking older engines are the hot thing, and they can flip old parts for more money next year. Good luck, I've got some dot com stocks if you want them.

Hmmmm... Interesting, Chuck. I went to visit one of my daughters in Manahattan, Kansas last January. In visiting a parts car guy on behalf of a friend back home, I saw a Packard with an original SC unit and ALL the bracketry outside a shop North and West of Fort Riley. The car was not restored, but the engine and all was complete... There are niches in the car market, I guess. Personally, I'd sell it for that amount of money, IF it were mine. -But, I'm not into Packards or Studebakers... And then, all of you could laugh at me because of the stupid Ford stuff I'd buy with the money from selling the SC! I wonder where I put that guys address and business card... ???

As far as I can tell the only differences in the VS-57 was the name plate. The OVS-57 was fed engine oil and I thought it was a later modification. And this one didn't even have the Packard nameplate. Maybe it will take one of the real collectors to answer this one.

That price might have been related to the original bracketey stated....I have never seen McCulloch Packard brackets. Rare I am sure. However I do wonder why if it was a direct oil feed the unit would have a dipstick??? I thought the VR units and the DO units were direct engine oil feed only.... Charlie? Anyone?
