I got one from these people   www.autoelec.com    for my 312 about 7 years ago.  Never had any problem with it.

Mummert's  Mini starter looks like a good design, but I've never seen any details on it.  Some so called high torque starters may be of questionable design. Saw one for a Y-blk at an auto swap meet. Looked like a piece of  crap. Keep in mind that original starters engage from the rear, & the fly wheel is tabbed to keep the ring gear on that way. Any starter that engages from the front, may cause the ring gear to work off the fly wheel....  If a person needs a replacement starter, one route is to use an "early" F.E. engine series starter, up to 1964 only. Later ones are a not compatible front engagement design. ( Ted Eaton wrote a letter to Y-block Magazine some time back, re the F.E. starters)

I'm using a stock 1955 Ford 6v starter on my souped 322 inch 312. I have a trunk mounted 12v battery in the car and the 12v starter just turned too slowly for my liking. This setup has been working great for many years now and the engine fires almost instantly... plus it sounds right!

I have no idea why you'd need a different starter.  If your starter is in shape, snug bearing, good brushes, no shorts, connections tight, proper size CABLES and good battery it'll work and start same as new.  Mine is 6 volts, I have full sized 6v cables and good starter, it spins and starts no problem at all, winter and summer.
Most starting problems include some of the things posted above, solve those before trying to "improve things".  Remote batteries are not a good idea either, keep things close, the way Ford intended.

to much advance, go to dura spark conversion,it has a built in retard at cranking to ease the load,or use the 6v starter,wont hirt it as the 56starters just ahad a aditional coil to slow then a bit,lots of56 57s wound up with 6v starters
