There is a Holley 465 normally used in off road vehicles like rock crawlers an such that most don't know about. They are for torque and not real high performance and are a very good size for our Y engines. Worth a look in my opinion. I'm sure the could be used with one of the adapters on your stock manifold. One other thing, if you can acquire the exhaust manifolds from a 57 - up. The 55-56 are smaller and more round on top, the newer ones have a flat spot.. Good. Luck.

Here's a link to the question of replacing the points. Lots of info, including a wiring diagram. http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Topic5574.aspx A 600 is a lot of carb for a stock motor, but if the vacumn secondary's are properly set, it will work. There's a lot of good comments here on the 390 cfm Holley, and the smaller Venturi version of the 4100 (?) Autolites. A search will give you the particulars.

would 600 cfm carb be too much with conversion. I found a 600cfm recon holley for 180 bucks

Ask for the replacement distributor for a "64 Ford pickup (F-100 or similar) with a 292 v8. I believe the Cardone number is 2808-01 or something like that at several suppliers. Expect to pay about $100 or near to that. It is a single point distributor with internal mechanical advance and a vacuum advance pot.  You can get an inexpensive carb adapter from Speedway in Lincoln, Nebraska to fit a later design carburetor onto the '56 4bbl manifold. The carb hole patterns don't match - and throttle bores need (smoothly) aligned - but the adapters do a fair job for a reasonable price. If you can acquire an 1957 - or later 4bbl manifold that would be a good find. The stud pattern will accommodate later carbs - but as Mike said above - the throttle bore openings are small and if you don't use a heat isolator spacer (or open them up) there will be an awful flow restriction step below the carb. If you hunt around on here there are some clever instructions to modify the oil-bath air cleaner to accept a paper element - and still fit under the hood nicely.

The other thing to check is the throttle bores in the intake. I think the early ones were a smaller bore, and on modern small 4 barrels, the butterflies won't clear. So many manifolds were changed over the years you'll want to take a look. There's spacers available, and someone here will know the part numbers.

Probably the least expensive way out is using a 57 or later distributor with the new carb. A Pertronix conversion will give you an electronic ignition.

i recently acquired a 56 town sedan with 292 4 bbl I am planning on replacing the distrib and carb with more modern parts for reliability. but I need some advice on good low priced good performers. the car is basically all stock thanx
