Hey guys,

So my fuel gauge is reading E no matter what. I know the wiring is good as I've tested it with a volt meter, it has a new float and sender that has the correct 10 ohm rating. I'm guessing the original gauge must be had or seized from sitting for 18 years.

Does anyone know where I could get a replacement gauge for the original 6 volt system? Either an original or a aftermarket newly built one it doesn't matter to me just as long as it fits in the dashboard like the original.

Also, I know this isn't the tech forum but does anyone know if there's a way to test the old gauge to see if it's bad?

There is a repairer named Williamson's in Arkansas that repairs gauges if you can't find a replacement.

Check the old parts suppliers for a replacement.

Looks like you have gone thru the basic test procedures. But just in case you would like to have another chance to test the gauge itself I have a 2 page scan from my 1955 Ford Car Shop Manual in .pdf format. This gives wiring details and test procedures. It gives a method to test the gauge only. If I have it correct a 3V battery(s) power applied to the 2 terminals should give you 1/2 gauge reading. For some reason I am not allowed to attached a .pdf document to this reply. I wish I knew how to post pdf stuff? Anyways, If I have your email address I would email it to you.  - Bob

To check to see if gauge is working, simply disconnect wire at sending unit (yellow) and ground it with ignition turned to on or acc.  If gauge goes over to full mark after a few seconds, the gauge is fine, and the problem is either the sending unit or possibly the fuel tank itself not getting a good ground.  If gauge is bad, a 6 volt one from a t-bird should work, just might have to change out rear mounting plate.
