So I fixed my little overheating problem today by using the NAPA #6. The needle stays right comfortably in the middle of the guage now, what a relief. Of course it's always something right? So after I got home from a test drive tonight I went to crank the engine again and the battery was dead! I went to crank it because right when I got on my street the engine stalled out and the GEN light came on. I was able to restart her, drive her up the driveway and park. My car has had this problem where once it gets up to temperature it'll start developing this rough idle and idle really weakly when not applying gas or when coasting downhill or sitting at a stop light. Keeping the gas feathered kinda keeps that problem in check though.

For a long time I thought it was a symptom of overheating but obviously that's now been ruled out. My second idea was that maybe the carburetor is out of adjustment, those Holley 4000s have a hot idle screw don't they? Or maybe the base idle is too low? That's my first question, do you guys know of any videos of guides showing how to properly adjust those teapot carburetors? I'm not really sure what a proper cold idle should sound like, or what the hot idle should be set at. There's also the chance it could be the automatic choke being out of wack. I noticed if I managed to keep the car running on feathered gas pedal and manually move the choke flaps to about half choke the engine would pick back up again. This seems off since a hot engine should run with the flaps totally open right?

Then of course there's the charging system, which might be the real problem. I don't really know what could be wrong, the generator has been rebuilt twice and by a place that came highly recommended. Allen Armatures in Kansas City. The v6 regulator has also been completely replaced by a new one from O'Reily Autoparts, and yes I made sure it's a 6v unit. I've heard it mentioned maybe there's a bad wire somewhere in the wiring harness? Could anyone point out where the wiring harness is and what to be looking for? Also what are some common volt-meter tests that can be done on the generator and regular to see if they're working? I don't have a lot of experience with voltmeters or working with power systems in general. : /
