The only way it a 9 inch rear is someone but a 9 inch center in the 57 housing, other wise it's a 8 3/4 rear.

What Lou is bringing up is interesting. The '57 rear end assembly is referred to as a 9 inch and the later 9 inch center section will go into it, perhaps with just a little grinding to make the ring gear clear the housing. The '57 center section is not a true 9 inch in dimension. Fun!

The early 9" rears, 1957-58 are a bit smaller than later ones, but are considered desirable for some applications, because of their narrower overall width.
