A 1960 F-100 big back window, short wide bed with a 292 V-8, it's a great truck!!   I'm certainly not the one to be advising someone but I'll tell you what I was told once, it's yours do what suits you.

Car shows, magazines, and trucks on the street. You'll see so much you won't need to ask anyone. No need to rush into anything take your time it looks cool as it is.

Try this past thread for info regarding the exhaust manifold heat shields that originally came on the trucks.

Try these links to other discussions regarding the use of the HD truck exhaust gaskets being used with the car and light truck exhaust manifolds. Many Y engine builds do not use the HD truck exhaust gaskets simply because many people are unaware that they were even produced. Many other builds forfeit the use of the individual spark plug shields for a variety of reasons with the #1 reason being that the original shields are in poor condition and not reusable. It’s not a show stopper if the spark plug shields are not being used.

Thanks ted, I tracked down a set of heat shields, I wont be using them until I get rams horns. So I will just get regular gaskets for now. What is the best type and brand? What I have read I dont.dont the ones that come in the rebuild kit since they tend to crack the manifolds.

I’ve discontinued using the fibre backed exhaust gaskets that are available for both the FE’s and the Y engines.  There were just too many issues with the exhaust manifolds cracking after awhile as a result.  What I use now if not using the HD truck gaskets (which are also available for the FE engines) is a thin film of high temperature RTV on the head and exhaust manifold surface before assembling those pieces.  I’ve been using the same high temperature RTV treatment in lieu of header gaskets on the race cars and that also looks to be working well.
