I bought a 56 Merc 312 engine at  the Mercuryland auction and after getting it home I found that the block had a hole from rod going thru.  Anyway after tearing the engine down the crank still looks good. I will be selling crank and my question is should I have is reground first,  The crank is now a standand grind and should clean up at -.010.  or do I sell as is.

If it were me, I would have it checked for cracks (magnafluxed) and if it checks out okay, then have it ground just enough to clean it up. You can recover the cost when you sell it and it will save you headaches down the road if you sell it as is and there is a problem.

It depends on what you want for it, I would rather get it in as is condition and have my own machine work done. If you have it cleaned and checked, you will have too factor that expense into your asking price and most likely who ever buys it will have additional machine work done.

I would say sell it as is.  I wouldn't want a crank that was ground by someone other than my own machinist. (Me)  If it goes to a production shop and they grind the radius out of it you might as well call it junk.  Another thing is if you pay for the grind can you really add that much to the price.

Along with what the others have said, a buyer might prefer a used standard journal so that he can offset grind it for more stroke.  If you have already taken off some of the metal, it restricts how much he can offset grind it.
