I need a gas tank for a 59 Edsel Ranger.  I've spend some time looking for a new replacement without luck.  I've read online that the 59 Ford's don't fit but that the 61-64 Fords (Galaxie??) can be used with slight modifications.  I looked at a new replacement for the 64 Ford Galaxie (Spectra F57B?).  It looks like it might fit but it's hard to tell until I put it up to the car.  The sending unit is mounted in a different spot.  On the Edsel it is right on top with an access hole in the trunk.  The Ford one looks to be on the front of the tank.

Anybody had any experience with this?

John

I have a new 61-64 Ford replacement tank coming.

It is suppose to fit with 2 minor modifications. The new tank is unvented so I will need to use a vented cap and the position of the sending unit is different so I will have to extend the wire.

I'll post again after I actually get it in my hands.

I got the 61-64 full size Ford tank late last week.  It's true that it will mount using the old Edsel mounting straps and that the sending unit is on the front of the tank instead of the top which is not a problem.  It is a non-vented tank so it will need a vented cap but it does have a flat where the vent was on the old tank so I guess you could put one in if you wanted to.

What wasn't mentioned when I ordered it was that the filler neck is about 4" too short and not bent correctly for the car.  It sits to deep behind the license plate.  Maybe you can reach the cap if you have long fingers and don't mind getting cut on the sharp opening in the body behind the plate.

I will have to modify the neck using the neck from the original.  The new filler is a slightly larger diameter so hopefully the old neck will fit inside pretty tight for welding.

Did you get from Glass city or some other vendor?

Would you let me know how long the filler tube is?

Thanks,

Ron.

I got the tank from Auto City Classics.  The new filler tube is straight and about 8" long.  The old original tube has a slight bend in it and is about 12" long.

The new tube is slightly larger in diameter also.
