The flapper valve in my McCullouch bonnet is broken. Does anyone have one or know where I can find one? Also, is it really needed? As I understand it lets the boost pressure escape at idle or low speeds.

I'm not sure if I need to replace it or just plug the hole. I've noticed some of the bonnets don't have this valve. Thanks, Chuck in NH

On my VR bonnets, I make new flaps from a thin rubber disc that I re-rivet to the leaf spring.  Frank makes the spring and discs for his repop bonnets.

The purpose of the flap is to open when the engine is not running to vent the fumes from inside the bonnet for easier hot starting.  Don't tell the EPA.  You can try plugging the hole, and if it starts OK hot, you're in business.

Chuck, I use a piece of steel  banding for the spring, and i like to use the rubber piston from a brake cylinder for the flap. pop rivet the flat side to the band. I thin the bands down to about 3/16" or so wide to make sure they're not too stiff.

Sounds good. The spring is what broke on mine. The origional had a sort of hour glass shape and the thin part broke off. I may try plugging the hole to start but will probably make a spring for it. Thanks guys! Chuck

Thanks for the suggestions. I found some strapping and made a new spring for the valve. Works great! Often the simple answer is the hardest one to see. Thanks again. Chuck
