Has anyone on here ever used a Mallory point conversion sold as Balkamp by NAPA?If so,any comments,good or bad about them?I've used Pertronix with good luck for years on several vehicles,but I just had a fairly new one die on me and I thought I might try something else for once.

Hi Paul,  A friend of mine who does a lot of hot rodding told me that Mallory's quality control is pretty bad these days.  If I were in the market, I think I'd try the Accel brand which Summit sells.  The only thing I have now that is Mallory branded is a fuel pressure gauge which I have mounted under the hood.  The first one died, the shop replaced it under warranty.  The replacement is a piece of crap, it works when you first start the engine but then in 15 minutes or so it drops down to a zero reading.  I actually hooked up another gauge with a Y fitting so that both gauges could work at the same time- when the Mallory dropped down to zero PSI the other gauge showed 4-5 PSI with the engine running.  This is on my '57 312.  Maybe someone else with more Mallory experience will jump in with more info.  Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO

This seems to be the nature of the beast with most pressure gauges. I've had three that do it, a Russell, a Mr. Gasket, and a Summit brand. The engine heat affects it. What is the brand of the one that continues to read?

I've heard some negative things about Mallory from others,also.It may not matter because in searching on line every dealer that handles them says they are out of stock.So they are extremely popular or just the opposite.I think I'll stick with Pertronix.

Check Ebay for an ACCEL 2020 points conversion kit. Suspossedly a Mallory rebranded as an Accel. I just picked one up for under $40 delivered. Pete

Hi Guys,  Charlie, thanks for the tip about fuel pressure gauges all reading low.  I think I will try a VDO brand if I get around to replacing mine.  The 1/8 NPT pipe threads on my Mallory are crappy also.  When I hooked up a second gauge, it was just my cheap R.A.C. vacuum gauge/ fuel pump pressure combo unit.  I didn't run it long enough to see if it would continue to read properly.  Paul, I had a Pertronix unit fail on my car also, but when I pulled the distributor cap it was obvious that one end of my ground wire had pulled out of the crimp-on terminal.  I replaced it with another Pertronix and a better ground wire, no problems in several years.  Don't know if the sudden lack of ground connection did the unit in, but I think that was a factor.  Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO

Paul, these were the early mallory dual point kits you could convert your standard dist to dual points etc. I would stick with the pertronix! regards bill.
