I'm thinking about cutting the mufflers of my Galaxie off. I have dual exhaust, and a H pipe just under the tranny, and all pipes are 2". The mufflers I have now are 40 series flowmasters, they sound nice, but a fellow of mine that's building a '47 Merc with a 292 passed with it by my house, I I loved the sound of the straight pipes he has.
My only worry is burning an exhaust valve, with the lack of backpressure.
Anyone run straights?
The sound is AMAZING, and it's not too loud (at least for me).

I did, but the car is not ready, and he only took it from the shop to have the front end aligned.
Since my engine is new, I'm on the safe side here.

Exhaust valves shouldn't be a problem since you have the exhaust system installed. It will still hold the heat in to keep valves from warping or burning.

I put about 400,000 on a 56 Ford in the 60's and 70's. I had various Y-blocks in it. Sometimes I had straight pipes at times and sometimes Smithy straight through mufflers. Exhaust valves were the least of my worries.

That's good eneugh for me. I think the valves will be just fine.
I never ran a angine with straights, so I was a little worried.
Thank's for the experience.

Everyone runs without mufflers at the drag races. No problem.

Tulio: If you live in a residential neighborhood & run straight pipes, you will not be popular! ....

I want to try 2 in. straight pipes also. They may actually be quieter inside the truck than the current setup with glass packs, which exit in front of the rear fender not far back from the cab.
