Last week while cleaning a bit of oil/dirt accumulation from front of heads, there was red paint on the rag!  It had some gas on it and the paint was coming off little at a time.  Wish I remembered which paint I used, but think it was Rustoleum Engine enamel.

What is a better choice?

I'll have to look, but I think I used Duplicolor. I've never wiped it with a rag with gasoline but it seems to hold up well for rattle can paint. Back when I built the engine the 2nd time, after about 10k miles, it was still on there. It had some stains and if there are any oil leaks, the oil will eventually peel the paint. If you keep it dry and detail the engine once in a while (neither of which I'm good at) I think it will hold up well.

Hey Charlie and Mike;   Just my 2 cents,,,  but I use Simple green to clean----   works good does not ectch or stain.  Just wash off with a water hose!!!   Hope this helps..     Gods bless    Eddie

I've used Bill Hirsch's paint with good success. Located in NJ. I've even sprayed the paint with carburetor cleaner - it got a little tacky, but didn't come off.

I’ve seen engines brush painted with POR-15 and this appears to be quite resilient against chemicals as well as holding a good shine for several years.

Ive been using stuff called Krud Kutter, avail at local ace hdwre.  Works fantastically.  I was amazed, actually, since i had previously used engine cleaner from Griots Garage (corrodes exposed AL), and simple green.  The Krud Kutter seems to be really easy on engine paint, too!

Thanks Ted, for the great idea! I have been a fan of POR15 for a long time, and it topcoats well when still slightly tacky, so any color can be added over it. I have also used it with great success on the outside of gas tanks to keep them from rusting. Tom

After using Simple Green to clean the engine paint the engine with POR-15 paint. It is available in all engine colors and is available from several sources. I bought some from Juliano's (the seat belt people). 860-872-1932 or at julianos.com I bought some Alum POR-20 engine exhaust manifold paint ($19.75) and a POR-15 engine painting kit with special cleaner, solvent, metal prep, brush, gloves, & face mask. ($54.50) Not cheap but the best product for the job.

Thanks for all the replies.  Krud Kutter or Simple Green sounds like the way to go for cleaners.  Havent ever used either but will.  Por15 sounds good too, but is there any problem with removal from unwanted areas, i.e. gasket surfaces?  At least paint can be easily wiped away with lacquer thinner.

The only time I used Por15 was years ago to seal a gas tank.  It set up like porcelin.

I do a final wash with plain old dish washing soap to get rid of the last of the oil. Seems to work. I will try the POR-15 on my next block though. Chuck in NH
