I had my 272 rebuilt this past winter and put back in my 58 Fairlane...now my trany whines when I decelerate...most in 1st and 2nd gears...there is no noise driving down the road.....my fluid level seems to be ok.... Any ideas? I sound like a bus when I down shift.....the radio only goes so loud to cover it.... Cheers Gord

Gord: A bad bearing in the trans can cause gear whine because it allows the gears to be mis-aligned. Ususally it is the bearing in the rear of the case (not the extension housing bushing). High gear doesn't whine because the trans is in straight through mode and there is little if any load on the intermediate gears.

Well don't I feel dumb....The guy who put my engine back in said the trany fluid was fine and full.....I thoughts I'd check myself today.....next to none....it took a couple of pints. And, the noise is gone. Thanks for the ideas though. Gt

Good deal! Sure was a lot cheaper than replacing a bearing wasn't it?
