I've been trying to find a COM to replace my FOM and can't locate one that works on a Y-block.I did find one that came off of an FE.Anyone know if I can swap the bell from my FOM onto the COM and if that works, will the FOM flywheel and convertor work with the COM.

Paul: Yes, the bellhousing will fit. There may be a snag on the converter. Some transmissions had a 17 spline input shaft, some had 29. The FE trans will no doubt be 29. If the FOM is 29, all will fit. If it is 17, you will need to put the 17 spline shaft in the COM. That's a complete teardown of the trans, that shaft is the first thing installed in the case. The other option would be to find a converter from a 29 spline FOM. The flywheel will work.

My FOM is an air-cooled 56,so it's almost certainly a 17 spline.I haven't torn into an automatic transmission since I destroyed a Powerglide in my 57 in 1960,but I guess this might be the time for me to learn about the innards of a COM.I'm getting the transmission for nothing,so I guess I don't have a lot to lose if I screw it up. Thanks for the help,John

Paul: If your car is a 312 car, it may have a 29 spline input. Let's hope so.

AussieBill,Up here 62 was the last year for Y-blocks in cars,so there was only 5 years that Y-blocks and COMs were put together. And a couple of those years were cars that were not very good cars and ended up being scrapped at a higher than normal rate. The pickups used the Y through 64 but very few of them were ordered with a COM. John,I'm not that lucky. This FOM is from a 272 car.I have 2 312 parts cars, but I can't find the transmissions.Right now I have no idea what I did with them. The memory may not be the first thing to go,but it's right up there toward the top. Thanks Guys.

Yeah, Paul. I heard memory is the second thing to go, but I forgot what's first.

Paul:
If you can find a 55 early 56 Merc air cooled torque converter you can take the innards out of it. Mercs have the 29 spline turbine assembly, also take the stator as the Merc has a heavier spring and the better sprag and use with your Cruiseomatic or FMX transmission if using the cruiseomatic front pump. All the Merc torque converter parts will fit the split case steel case or aluminum case Fordomatic torque converter.
The next best is to find the late 56 and 57 split case steel Merc torque convertor as it has the 29 spline already and can be used as is with the cooler lines from your rad.
The ideal is to find the sealed case cruiseomatic torque convertor used in the 58 up dual range transmissions.
I would suggest sending it to have re-balanced again if you mix and match parts.

Thanks Marv, I haven't decided which way to attack this.I have a COM out of an early 60s 390 car that I'm planning to use.I did locate a convertor and flywheel that should work, but I don't have them in hand yet.The whole thing is probably going to have to wait a good while anyway.I had a little health issue pop up that's going to keep me out of my shop for a while. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!
