Getting ready to pullout the 4-speed trans out but what is it? Bolted to the back of the Y-block bellhousing(no adapter),has 2 bolt holes on each ear(8 total),not a top loader has removable cover on drivers side(T-10 ?),found I.D. tag on front passenger side : Top row---RUG BP GH26 Bottem row-- D7DR AA 1837 ? Would like to find out what the gear ratio is to compare to a T-5 to replace it with. Does anyone remember the formula for finding out the gear ratio for the 3rd member ? I marked the top of the tire and the center of the driveshaft,turned the tire one full rotation counting the rotations of the driveshaft came up with 2 rotations of the shaft to 1 complete rotation of the tire, is this correct? What would the ratio be 2.00 to 1 (tire size 225x70x15)? Thanks for all help KID

I think RUG is a Ford top loader or a variation of one. 2.00:1 sounds real tall for a rear end ratio.

I thought so to but I did this 3 times and came out the same,am I doing it wrong?I'm running the above 4-speed and it doesn't lug coming off the stoplite and I can't go 150 on the freeway. KID

The transmission is called a 3 speed overdrive transmission. Forth gear is an overdriven gear. Is there a big drop between 2nd and 3rd gear?
Sounds like you have a 3.98 rear axle.

Kid: Your method of checking the gear ratio isn't correct. You need to turn the wheel 2 revolutions instead of one, due to the differential gears. Your ratio is around 4.0, not 2.0. Probably a 3.90 or 4.10.

Thanks guys for the help! Redid the tire revolutions x 2 = a little over 3 3/4 turns of the driveshaft, I think that's 3.89's(stock gear for 57's).Looked up the RUG letters on the tag and the BP could be BF instead which they say is the 4-speed behind a s.b.f. in a '75 Fairlane. I thought that a Ford top loader had a removable access plate on top which mine doesn't , it has a removable side cover where the shift forks are like a BW T-10? I check to see if it was a Dagenham from early Mustang/Falcon but pictures don't match. Always learning! KID

Sorry guys, must be the stuff from the 60's kicking in again, got the '57 up in the airhigh enough to install the new rack/pinionfront end and was able to get a good look at the trans.It does have the access plate on top making it a top loader 4-speed with 2 bolt holes at all 4 corners. The ID tag on passenger side reads--RUG BP GH26 second row reads--D7DR AA 1837. Agin, sorry for the mis-information but truely due appreciate the help and info from you guys. Kid

Kid, It's not all that bad a way to go if you want an OD. Google David Kee toploaders, then look for the "imposters" section. There's a pretty good description of the RUG in that section.

Thanks Mike and Frank, Went to David Kees site and check the "imposter" section and there were my letters-- RUG BP it's a 3 speed with overdrive from about 1977 what a bummer, it shifts just like a 4-speed--R--1/2--N--3/4 ! I've almost finished the power rack/pinion setup on the '57 so I'll be looking for a T-5 5-speed to change over to with the 3:35 first gear to get that 3800 lbs beast moving!
