Not familiar with the part number but this could possibly be a LYB engine (also called an OHV or a Lincoln Y-Block) which is a different family of engines from the standard run of the mill Y-Blocks. These engines came in the Lincolns, some Mercurys, and many trucks. That engine could potentially be anything from a 317 introduced in 1952 to a 368 used as late as 1957 or a 302 and 332 truck engine used up until 1963. The thermostat on these engines will be sitting level in the intake manifold instead of vertical like on a Y. The valve covers will not have the eight scallops that are present on the Y and are slightly longer than the Y covers but still fasten with two nuts on studs. The LYB valve covers you mention are probably Mercury which would point you to the 368 but the covers themselves can be easily tranplanted to one of the other LYB engines. Got a pic?

My vote on the manifold is a 430 cubic inch Lincoln from the around '58. The carb is around '49-51 Merc, or maybe a Lincoln of that era. John in Selma, IN

John is right as the pictured intake manifold is definitely from a MEL engine. What car are you dealing with? The MEL family of engines were introduced in 1958 and consisted of a 383 for the Mercs, a 410 for the Edsel, and a 430 for the Lincoln and Thunderbird. There was also a three deuce 430 in ’58 that was available in the Mercs, Lincolns, and Thunderbirds. The largest and last member of this family of engines was the 462 and could be found in the '66/'67 Lincolns. The Mercury versions had a M and a line on the valve covers. The exhaust bolt pattern for the MEL engines was quite similar to that of an FE but slightly wider overall while the valve covers used six bolts around the perimeter to hold the covers in place as opposed to the two nuts per cover for the Y-Block and LYB engines.

Scott: This motor is of the 430 family, different from the 460 you asked about. But no matter, the only rams horns that fit a 292 have to be from a 292 truck. John in Selma, IN

I remember from my early military days, we had a couple of M211 2 1/2 ton trucks. They had GMC 6 cyl's with a hydromatic transmissions. The carb looked alot like the one pictured, best I remember they were made by Holly. Man that was a long time ago, I haven't though about those things in many years.
