This has always been a puzzle for me.  Factory invoices always treated an oil filter as an option.  The brochure for the 56 Birds also shows it as an option or available equipment.

Has any one ever run across a Yblock that didn't have an oil filter from the factory  ?  Is it even possible that the spot where the filter goes be blocked off and still have oil pressure throughout the engine ?

I have dealt with a lot of Y engines over the years and never saw one without an oil filter of some form mounted at the block.  On the rodder scene, remote filters are popular but there’s still an adapter at the block to route the oil lines to the remote filter.

I have also wondered about this - OPTIONAL FULL-FLOW OIL FILTER

It implies to me that either an oil filter was not provided or a BY-PASS SYSTEM was used as on the later FLAT-HEAD unless the buyer opted for the OPTION.

A oil filter was a option on flatheads.
I agree with Ted, I've never seen a  Y-Block with out a oil filter.
As It appearing on invoices , it was just a gimmick for the factory and the dealer to make a extra buck.

So the block-off plates were available for service and some must have come through with no filter.

I don't have a copy of the earlier 1948/1956 TRUCK MPC.

The above OPTION LIST is from a 1957 FORD PASS CAR SALES BROCHURE.
