It seems to me that there was a TECH ARTICLE once describing how to post early heads with threaded rod?

Is my dementia over riding my butt or is there a method?

Also why the steam holes (FEL-PRO) method is not advised?

I cannot figure out the SEARCH here so I need to aggravate the board.

Y-Block Mag. about 15 yrs. ago (head-posting article).  Steam-holes have little benefit, and can lead to cracks if compression seriously raised (as I remember).

That info is appreciated.

Was the article posted anywhere out of the magazine?

Further on the steam holes, they are not recommended just for a high compression engine or a street engine?

See if this link helps in directing you to the posting heads tutorial.

Having seen those Y heads with cracks running through the steam holes, I’m not a fan of those holes.  Considering the size of those ‘steam’ holes in the blocks and the propensity for them to plug or stop up over time, I go out of my way to plug those particular holes in the blocks if the heads were not already drilled for them.  If the heads have already been drilled for those extra holes, then I do leave the holes in the block if they are there.  That plugging operation for the holes in the blocks takes place before machining the decks.

Those vent holes showed up when the radiator tops became lower than the engine such as in the 1960-1962 model cars.  For those particular vehicles and when the coolant levels dropped, air did tend to get trapped between the center cylinders forcing the need for the holes to ‘bleed’ the air from that area.

My opinion is that Fel-Pro did a disservice to the industry at large in providing instructions to drill the blocks/heads with those holes if they were not already there.

Here are some links to threads on this site providing more information.

Ted,
I am extremely appreciative of your sharing your knowledge and experience. I am also appreciate of your taking personal time to gather all of this info and present it here. I don't know how you find the time as your shop must be busy.

That explains why.  Never knew or realized that ... Wink
