i found the tube and was looking at how this bent up piece fastens to the block.

its a front sump pan.

does the clip bolt to the forward facing bolt hole on lower corner of the head?

Couldn't remember what it bolted to so I just walked out to my '55 to see... And yes it bolts to the front of the head.

I see lots of discussion on front and mid block dip sticks for Y-Blocks. I removed the original cross over manifolds on a 292 and picked up a pair of Mummert reproduction Ram Horns. The original dip stick falls dead center of passenger side exhaust manifold. I could use the original dip stick tube and handle by cutting it down to about four inches in length. This would make it impossible to see and accessible only by feel. The other option would be to use a flexible dip stick offered by a vender such as Lokar, but I do not see one listed for Y-Block. Has anyone found a remedy for this situation?

I just use a car dipstick, shortened as necessary and a line scribed for the new full mark. You can try to order one through Lokar's custom department. I tried years ago. I gave them 2 chances to make it fit the block correctly. First it was too small. Then it was too big. And I provided the same dimensions both times. And the cosmetic quality wasn't there. Maybe they have a better machinist now.

I've purchased some of their stock items and they've been good but the custom department was not impressive.

Thanks Supreme, That is most likely the best and cheapest option and since its almost invisible from the top end, may be the best choice anyway!

Here is a picture of a pass car dip stick, a truck oil pan and ramshorns.  The dip stick is a little too long so it is cut off at the bottom.  I have the dipstick so it just grazes the pan bottom.  Fill it with 4 qts of oil and mark the low level then add a qt and mark the fill level.

 There are several different truck pans and a Tbird pan looks somewhat the same.  Whatever pan came stock with ramshorns must have a problem as the hole in the block doesn't allow for a straight dip stick.  Maybe the COE trucks had an 8' long flex dip stick!

If you have a block with a dip stick hole in the center of the block and use passenger dipstick in front, make sure you plug the hole. About 45 years ago I built a 292 out of a truck block and after an hour or two of driving on wet pavement, I lost oil pressure. I had picked up a couple of quarts of water through the open hole, the oil pump seized up and you can guess the rest.

Are the "Ramshorn" repos different the the originals? My dipstick goes right through the center of the manifold.

Bringing this back to life. Anyone have a source for a mid block flexible dipstick? With our turbo header we had to bend the stock stick out of the way to get home. Trying to find a permanent solution now. I've used Lokar before on other engines with good results, but I don't see an offering for a Y block. Any of the other Ford engines share a similar tube?
