Hot Rod Magazine, September 1954 issue, has an article in the technical catagory, "1954 Ford engine conversion". Its topic is the EBU engine.. Along with many other tricks, the article explains the difference between the '54 EBU (Ford) and the '54 EBY (Mercury) intakes. The location of the upper and lower ports is different (.083). The Edelbrock (I believe it is the 548) is taylored for the EBU heads.
My experience for what it's worth, I do have the EBY intake on my '54 EBU (I believe the intake gaskets sold by Felpro satisfy both the EBU and the EBY, please verify). I am sure when these cars were new, popular and numerous. the intake gaskets were different.
I have used three different 4 barrel carburetors on my EBY intake, the Holley 2140 (EBY), the Carter WCFB ('56 Merc) and the Ford 4100 (65 Mustange 289, C5ZF-E, 1.08 venturi) with adaptor plate. I'm using a '59 distributor with a 13 tooth gear. I have modified the Holley and Carter to have ported vacuum. All carburetors respond the same from 35/40 MPH and higher. From 0-35/40 MPH, the Carter WCFB is the strongest, Holley 2140 is 2nd and the Ford 4100 is 3rd. It seems that the 4100 is the most efficient and the Holley 2140 gives off more underhood gasoline smell when the engine is off. Mine is a Fordomatic and I'm using the '55 T-Bird bellcrank linkage.

Pat. Isn’t the 56 Mercury Carter WCFB set for a Loadmatic ignition. Here is a photo of one (not complete) showing the vacuum secondary and front economizer valve. I do have perfect one that is harder to get to. I used a 53 Cadillac WCFB on mine when I had a single 4 barrel and later ignition; it worked great. With dual quads I went to 53 Oldsmobile WCFB’s which are perfect for my 296” engine.

DryLakesRacer, You are correct regarding the '56 Mercury WCFB working with a loadmatic ignition. I modified the carburetor to have ported vacuum and work with a '59 distributor. My 1st choice was an early GM WCFB with progressive linkage. The '56 Mercury WCFB was readily available and affordable. Pat in AZ
