Looking for a 3 duece manifold, saw a Fenton on E-bay the other day! Question is, is one brand manifold better then another( Edelbrock,Fenton,Offenhauser, etc.) for performance and quality? I'm pulling off my Blue Thunder manifold/Demon 525 carb for the newstalgia look of the 3 duece setup. KID

From what I understand the Edelbrock is the best. I am not going to be racing my truck, I would take any of them just for the look.

I have an Edelbrock 553 (wihch is supposed to be the 2nd best one out there ) with 3 rebuilt Holley 94s . I would consider a trade. This is before I had them rebuilt. The bottom is painted red. Outer 2 have no idle circuits or choke. e-mail eadgpdhome@msn.com I am in Hickory NC if you are nearby.

Forgot. Edlebrocks provide better airflow to the carbs and make the fuel/air mixture better and all 3 get close to same fuel mixture. Its aliminum too which save about 15 lbs. This is recent picture. Blue looking crap at the fromt is a paint job gone bad. It has been fixed.

Thanks for the response guys,I was at a car show this weekend and just got back to the computer. I was looking for the best 3-duece manifold information to narrow the search. The Blue Thunder manifold/Road Demon 525 carb will be going on my Custom Tudor, I'm about 1 hour away from John Mummerts shop so we'll be talking about a stroker motor for a reliable street/strip motor in the near future(carb?). The 272c.i. in my Courier has the BTmanifold/525 Road Demon carb(68 primarys),Crane cam(int.108 atdc-ex.118 btdc at 222degrees duration for both),ECG heads,Red's headers,MSD Dist.(#8383), 2" dual exhaust(no x-pipe) into Flowmasters, backed by a T-10 4-speed, this is what I'd like to switch to the duece manifold for the newstalgia look for its time period! Re the original question about which Tri power manifold to use, while a storied name in auto racing otherwise, avoid the Offenhauser intake. According to an article in YBM on intakes, the interior design of the Offy is a dog performance wise. This was the manifold used in the buildup of the Y-block, back in 70-71 by Popular Hot Rodding. They struggled to get the engine to perform well, not aware that the intake was hampering their efforts to get good power...

Greg: As you say without a direct comparison it's difficult to know which is the best intake. However, based on the article which detailed the convoluted down flow design of the Offy, where the fuel mixture changes direction three or four times, as compared to the setups used by Edelbrock, Fenton & others, it's extremely doubtful that it would flow anywhere near as well as a stock 4 barrel setup. The proof of this was in the Popular Hot Rodding series on the Y-block. Despite substantial mods to the engine, but using the Offy intake for the final dyno test, it resulted in a disappointing 258 H.P. out of a 312 engine. Another undeserved black eye for our favorite engine.. As for the "look" advocates (including a good friend of mine) why would a person want their engine to look fast...but be slower?

Its always hard to tell unless you are able to interchange parts on the same engine and do tests as to whether one works better than the next. But after having the Offy manifold on my old 49 coupe motor for 10 years I never had any reason to think it lacked power. I wont argue that it is the best manifold just that it served me well and I would have no hesitation to buy another if one came up at the right price. In NZ thats what you call "your 2 cents worth" I think if you are just after "the look" it doesn't really matter which one you go for as long as its in good condition and at the right price. Cheers Greg Nice Set of BC covers there Greg, where did you score them?
