Looks like they are not yet reproducing them. A Gas Tank from 53-56 Ford will work with some Mods.Your best bet would be find a Shop that repairs and reconditions Gas Tanks and have yours repaired. Many Rad Shops also do Gas Tanks..

I found an old AACA Question regarding 54 Mercury Tank. 54-56 Ford will fit with some modifications. Repro Tanks are available for Ford for most 50's Models from several Sources including Macs, Rock Auto etc.

As to the gear ratio, here’s a calculator. Guessing at a 28” tire, and plugging your numbers in (rpm mph) it came back at 4.86 to 1. I doubt that, but anything is possible. Anything over 3.9 or so would have been a manual overdrive transmission, so next question is what transmission do you have. Also is it 239, or was a 6 available in that car that year. I know next nothing about 54’s and less about Merc’s but more knowledgeable folks will chime in. https://www.summitracing.com/newsandevents/calcsandtools/gear-ratio-calculator

Never heard back if the Throttle Pressure Rod has been checked.

Miker. The '54 Mercs had a bigger version of the '54 Ford 239 V-8. It was a 256 with a 4 barrel Holley. I'm not sure if the model of the Holley was 4000, but it looks like an early version of one. Like the '55 Ford and Merc intake manifolds, the automatic choke affixed to the intake manifold rather than to the Holley carburetor body. Interesting that like in the flathead days, they ran a bigger V-8 in the Mercs than the Fords. That said, the '50s Mercs looked heavier than the Fords to me.

Well that would explain a 4.86 rear drive ratio in the calculator. With a 4.86, it would be the quickest 239 from stoplight to stoplight anybody ever saw.
Oops, I knew the merc’s had a 256. Chalk that up to old guy memory.

Interesting. I knew heard of a 256 Y Block. Was it the same motor?

Same engine, bigger bore if I remember correctly. One year size, used in 54 Mercs and 54 Ford police specials. Florida_Phil (10/29/2018)
