Hey guys, need some input, I'm putting my engine together for the 59. Put oil in it and started to prime the oil pump. It started leaking oil around the rear main. I used a Fel-Pro seal. I also made sure it was installed correctly. Is there a better seal. I hate to go back to the rope seal. 
Your thoughts.

I don't think it's the seal, there is no pressure at there by just turning the pump, I would look at the cam plug (above the crank seal), make sure all the plugs are in the back of the block. 

I checked the cam plug and it's dry. It's coming from around the crank.

I never did stop my rear seal from leaking. See my previous posts on this subject.

Click on the "Links" at the Top of the Page. Go to Eaton Balancing. He has a very good Article on installing a Rear Main Seal. I have been told that in many cases its not the Seal Itself that is leaking ( unless there is a Groove in the Crankshaft) but the Side Seals are the problem. There is a Sealant that some are using in place of the Side Seals which seems to be successful. You do need to invert the Engine to fill the Side Seal Area and it must be clean and dry..  I think most People are using the Neoprene Seals like Best Gasket sells instead of the Rope Style.

  

I bought another seal and installed it, primed the pump and now dry as a bone. I don't know why, I couldn't see anything wrong with the seal. Murphy's law, but I would rather repair it while it's on the engine stand and not in the car.

Good. I would still recomend reading the Article that I suggested. There are some tips that may prevent Leaks down the Road. A lot of Times they won't drip right away but later they will. Much easier to fix on the Stand.

  

I read the article, thanks for the tip. When I installed the new seal I followed the article to make sure there are no leaks.
