Folks, I need a bit of information I'd like to know the easiest way to determine that the rocker arms are getting the required amount of oil to them? Is there a procedure that you have used to accomplish this? I can remove the valve covers, but what do I look for? Engine idling, should I see oil from some particular locations out of the shafts? Thanks so much Jim

If oil is coming out of the overflow tubes with the engine running, then the rocker shafts are full of oil and all rockers and pushrods should be getting enough oil. This is assuming the rocker shafts are not full of sludge which prevents the oil from getting to the rockers. You should see oil drips on the bottoms of the rocker arms.

If the oil is coming up correctly, you should see the excess oil coming out of the overflow tube at the end of end of the rocker shaft - right at front, left at back. To check if the rockers are getting oil, look for oil at the bottom the rocker chamber and look for dripping at the rocker itself. There is not a real heavy stream at the rocker, but you should oil dripping from the rocker.

Is this a rebuild engine or? Sometimes engine "rebuild" means different things to ... some people. If you're like me you'll eventually become interested in the condition of the rocker arms themselves and the rocker shafts, pushrods etc. Particularly on the bottom side of the rocker shafts, heavy galling will be evident just about guaranteed. At this point they are likely scrap. And they become full of sludge due to poor oils of the period and/or infrequent oil change service, short trips etc.
