Looking for advice on oil leak fixes that were successful. Some say there is no answer other say the newer seals work if installed correctly. 

Some have advised there is no fix....  Are there members who have had success with the 292 v8 's please advise

Carefully following Ted Eaton’s instructions and using a Best Gasket I’ve been fine on the 292’s. The only problem I’ve had was with the “orange” Best Gasket for the 312, I think they pretty much all failed. The replacement black one seems to be holding up fine.

Note the other causes of leaks at the rear that are not the main seal.

I replaced mine with a neoprene seal ... Damn thing leaks exactly the same    "no oil leaks means there's no oil in it"

my leak was from the rear seal retainer,not enough aria for a good seal,i filled the bolt holes after tightening the 2bolts  with high temp permetex.
then put longer studs in r/s retainer putting sealer on studs . with longer studs made a plate to be sure the pan had better pressure to gasket. the oil WAS  leaking there and running into clutch cover indicating rear main seal. THAT WAS NOT THE CASE.. so far no rear seal drips

To clarify, is the Neoprene seal from Best the Orange one ? If so that's the one that has not proved successful apparently. It is replaced by the Black seal. I believe they  also sell a redesigned rope seal..

I think he said the Best Gasket neoprene seal for the 312 is orange and has NOT held up well. The replacement neoprene seal for a 292 is black and has been reported to hold up well. I suppose if you have a 312 main the best option is to use the rope seal. 

The orange 312 seal was actually orange. They were a soft silicone l believe. Failed in under 500 miles. They quit making them, so the only hazard is getting one from old stock. The replacement seal in the 312 I got from Mummert, IIRC it’s the replacement Best
Gasket, and is neoprene. It seems to holding up fine, but I don’t have a lot of miles yet.
