Hey folks, I'm a new member wanting to see if anyone could suggest a machine shop that is y block friendly close to Springfield MO. I have finally gathered enough engine parts to start work on my '54 f100 project. Thanks

Ted Eaton is down near Waco, Texas. He is one of the best around. Not a bad drive from Missouri.

There is nobody better with Y-blocks than Ted Eaton.He's only about 500 miles from you and it would be worth the drive to have him build your engine.When he returns it to you it will be broken in properly and dynoed and ready to run.A plus is that he is very reasonably priced.

I would also encourage you to make the trip to Texas to have Ted Eaton do whatever work you need done on your Y-block.

All engine makes and series have their idiosyncrasies and nuances.  I'm using a capable engine machine shop ~100 miles from me who has done several y-blocks for others.  I selected the shop because of their machining capability and equipment, machining experience, experienced workers, AND the owners openness and willingness to discuss information about topics like y-block cylinder head pad thicknesses, zero decking the block to attain appropriate cylinder head quench factor, obtaining proper radius-es in turning 312 cranks for use in 292s, and boring connecting rod bushings to attain uniform center to center lengths in re-conditioning rods..

IF Ted were not sooo far from me in Central New York, I would be working with him first hand instead of having to count on him for technical advice.

Carl has an amazing operation.  I had been looking at the many shops in and around Central N.Y. and even into New Hampshire.  Felix Natoli turned me to Carl.  I toured his shop and we talked at length.  I'm very confident that he'll provide excellent service all under one roof.  He has Cam Doctor equipment for determining the specs on the cams I've got, doesn't bat an eye at turning 312 mains down to 292 size (has two crank grinders), bores connecting rod bushings to get the center to center distance equal, has a machine that will do CNC repetitive valve throat, seat, and exit flow angles (this thing is newer than the Serdi unit he also has), does valve guide work, complete engine balancing capability, and has a dyno facility, although I don't know that he has run a y-block on it.  He does a large amount of racing engine work.  Felix has had him do two engines for him.  The last one was a 'do everything' 312 that is a '57 F code with the correct original heads.

IF you contact Carl, mention Felix Natoli's name.  Felix worked through two 312s with him.  I'm just getting on board with Carl with two I've got to do.

Boesser Machine in Aviston Ill did the machine work on mine. A lot closer to you than Texas. Good work and reasonable. Small shop, small town. Does a lot of stock car engines and engines for restorations. If I was going to start from scratch with one I would think about shipping a block to him and having him build it and ship it back. Cheaper than driving there twice.
