And now to add to the misery, I find the new Isky cam is bent by 8 thou. I feel like giving up and throwing the damn thing in the river.

If the Cam is out that much, no wonder it won't install.. I believe someone else here reported a similar trouble.  I would think a straight replacement is needed before doing anything with the block...
