I have acquired a 239 yblock and would like to switch pulley over to a 292 - 56 ford type pulley. It looks like it should switch but not sure what it requires or if it will even work. Advice appreciated...Whipper

All the Y-Block dampers will interchange on the '54-'64 engines; crankshaft and seal dimensions are the same. You will have to watch out for outer clearance issues at the front mount on some of the earlier engines; some of these had the smaller diameter dampers which may require a later model front mount to go along with the later model damper. That's assuming you are working with an application that requires a front mount. You didn’t mention if this was a truck or car engine which will have some differences in belt pulleys. In these cases, the water pump pulley will also need to be changed out.

I believe it is a 239 from a 1954 Ford auto. I have old 292 which I could take front cover off and use. I will check and make sure pulleys line up. Should I change seal, I assume they are same?

Should I change seal, I assume they are same? If the timing cover seal is aged or looks to have been leaking, this would be a good time to change out that seal. That seal is the same for all years.

Thanks Ted, I have that cover gasket but I mean the seal that goes in cover housing that goes around crankshaft. I believe part no. 6700 or close to that, I do not see that part listed in my catalog so I wonder if it has to be changed. Ok Roger I just saw your post and right it probably best to change that seal if I can get one. Do you know if that seal is in a overhaul gasket set?

If you are using the steady rest (car) for a 54 239, the 292 damper will not fit. You have to either leave it off or use a 55-56 steady rest. I found this out when I put a 312 in my 54.

Yes, I have a 56 steadyrest. I am putting 239OHV in my 56 Vic. The crankshaft pulley on 239 is smaller and comes off ok but still another piece that has to come off crank on keyway that I can`t seem to move. I don`t want to break anything, Do you have any suggestions what might be making this stick. I am trying to install 56 pulley on crankshaft..

The ’54 damper when removed should leave the crankshaft fully exposed so that the later model damper can be installed. Can you post a picture?

Ted, mine is a 239 car engine in the truck. There's a steel spacer that went over the crank snout first, then the pulley. Pulley is shorter than a dampner. The seal rides on that spacer. The spacer just slides on and off, nothing holds it except the crank snout bolt.

SUCCESS. I finally got that piece off of crankshaft. It was a spacer and with a little persuading I finally got it to slide out. Thanks Ted and Pintoplumber for advice that got my problem solved, and to all who commented. I have another problem but I will see if I can figure it out. Thanks again...WHIPPER.
