On my '55 Fairlane the brake lights stay on even after I am out of the vehicle.  I unplugged one of the connectors from the sender on the master cylinder and they, of course went of.  I cleaned up the connections and hoped that was all.  That was last week.  They did it again today.

I'm guessing that means I need to change out the sender.  Can anyone confirm?

Sounds like bad connectors, unless your cleaning the connectors shook the contacks inside the sender loose. My advise, clean the contacks again, if it happends again replace the sender.

Sounds like the master cylinder is not returning all the way, or the weep hole in it is plugged.  Next time they stay on, crack a bleeder screw loose and see if they go out.  If they do, the master cylinder is the problem.  If they don't, it's the switch.

If you have the factory pressure switch for the stop lights, then add a collapsed brake line to the list of probabilities.  If the brake lights are on but glow weakly, then the switch itself would be at the top of the list.

I think the cheapest and easiest thing to do is replace the switch.  If that does not work, then do the things mentioned above.

To see if the pressure is off, raise the wheels and see if there is excessive drag on the wheels.  If so, pressure is being maintained in the system and it could be a bad flex line or the master cylinder is not returning all the way.

I think this is what I'll do.

I "had" to drive it yesterday for a video shoot that had others involved, and that couldn't very well be rescheduled.  Fortunately I had a buddy behind me who was aware of the problem so was looking for me slowing and braking w/o the lights.

We stopped first for fuel and that time they were on.  I unplugged the wire and replugged it several times, but they would not go off that time.

As the day went on, sometimes they would stay on and sometimes they would go off.  I was told to try hitting the brake pedal hard next time they're stuck on to see if the bigger drop in pressure when I released the pedal would be enough to off the switch.  I haven't tried that yet.

Got home and backed into the garage and they were off, so the issue is definitely intermittent.

Thanks all who responded.  I'll post the link the the home produced, just for fun, music video we made in my former home town once it's all edited together.  Probably a week or two from now.
