She started up tonight at about 8:30.  It is sweet!  Absolutely worth the many, many hours of work!

The Y sounds absolutely wicked with the X-pipe and glass packs!  The torque is amazing.  I'd like to get it on a chassis dyno to see what I have.  3rd gear cruising down the road and it will take off!

Thanks to all who offered advice and insight relating to this project.

By LON - 18 Years Ago
Congratulations!!!! That looks great ,but I'm sure it sounds even better ??? When do we get to hear it running ??? I love the wild X -pipe .

WE WANT SOUND !!!

Regards Lon

I'll see if I can get a hold of a decent sound recorder.  I would like to get some video.  I don't want to buy a camcorder just for that though.

It will have to wait for a week or so.  I have to get new rocker arms.  The old ones aren't holding the adjustment very well.  I've put about 30 miles on it.  The plugs are bone white.  So it looks like I will be able to find some more power as I tune it.  It hasn't done any knocking though.  Timing is at about 10 initial and 35 total.

I made a video, primarily to record the sound, while it was warming up this morning.

The glass packs have been swapped for Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers but it still sounds good!

Couldn't rev it - Too early in the morning.

Sounds & looks fantastic!  Maybe a ride-along video next???

What heads did you end up with?  Any other specs you willing to share?

By charliemccraney - 17 Years Ago
Sure! There are no machining secrets or anything in this motor. I did check clearances and I know where everything is.

It is a 318 stroker kit from Mummert. The heads are street ported G's with 1.6:1 Dove roller rockers. Compression is some where between 9.4 and 9.6. The cam has .295 lift, 226@.050, 274 advertised, 112 lobe separation and installed about 2.5 degrees retarded. The headers are Red's stubbies, 1 1/2" primaries and 2.5" collector. The exhaust is 2.5" from the headers to the outlets which dump just in front of the axle. The carb is an Edelbrock 600 with a K&N filter, housing, and stub stack. The intake is Blue Thunder. I think that is all of the important specs.

Y-Guy: I'm jealous!!!!! Thats a rightous ride man.

While admiring everything, I have a question. What is the

mastercylinder from? (I'm about to tackle that job soon.)

                                       Thx Bill

By charliemccraney - 17 Years Ago
The master cylinder is a corvette unit.  I think 1968ish.  I made a mounting plate to mount it.  It's about the same as the stock ford plate. The bolt spacing is a little wider on the chevy mc.

Thanks Charlie.  2/5 Degrees Retarted?  Was the s/c cam built with alot of advance or something?   I think I read that Hoosier H. sets his back a degree or two...

Hey charlie, it looks great! I'll bet it sounds as sweet as it looks. I'm looking forward to seeing it run at the shootout. Keep us all posted.

Stake bed:

I'm not running the same cam as Charlie, and I'm running mine with a straight key.

John F, since you are looking to see Charlie at Columbus next year, that means you'll be there again.  We GOT YA.

The other John F.

By John F - 17 Years Ago
I will be there for sure. I admit it I'm hooked.
By charliemccraney - 17 Years Ago
Stake,

I wanted to install the cam straight up but the keyway is off enough that I could not.  I probably could have played around with the cam chain to get what I wanted but I didn't think of it at the time.

John,

I plan to be there again this year.  Hopefuly the truck will make it this time.  I made it to Tennessee last year.  I have a lot of work to do between now and then -  a new wire harness and replacing the cab mount sheet metal are at the top of the list.  I'd like to have a 5-speed in too.  I may just try to trailer it there.  I don't normally like doing that but it's 600 miles, one way.  There's a lot of stuff on it that's still old - it wouldn't be good for it to break while racing that far away.  It looks like there may be a good number of trucks there this year!

Hoosier,

What's a straight key?  Is that what I'm calling straight up?

By pegleg - 17 Years Ago
Charlie,

Factory key, no advance, no retard. That thing sounds great  Young'n!

By pintoplumber - 17 Years Ago
Charlie, I hope you can make it with the truck to Columbus. That would be neat to have a good amount of trucks this year. I agree with the trailer. Around home I'll drive it to the tracks, but for a long haul I use the trailer. Plus if the scruburban breaks down, I can tow it home with the blue truck.

Charlie,

Before there were adjustable timing chains available, you could buy/juggle custom offset keys of various degrees to dial-in cam timing.
By pcmenten - 17 Years Ago
Outstanding! It does sound very cool. I was impressed that the engine still sounded like it had a lope even with a cam with 112^ LSA.

I'm guessing that having the 2-4 degrees extra LSA was the reason for installing the cam slightly retarded. That ought to have some nice top-end power.

Edit: IIRC, the Chevy 6cyl keys will fit and someone makes offset keys for them.
By charliemccraney - 17 Years Ago
It smooths out a little once it has warmed up but there is still some lope at idle. I didn't want to install it retarded. I just couldn't get it where I wanted with the adjustable timing set. I wanted it... straight key. It has good power off idle but it really starts to come on up around 2500. I plan to put a little boost on it at some point and built the bottom end with that in mind. It should handle 6 pounds or so. I'll have to swap the heads. The problem is I'll get used to it and want to crank the pressure up so I'll probably tear it down to install proper pistons when I get to that point.

g'day charlie

all i have too say about your yblock  can be summed up in one word "AWSOME" it sounds & looks great best of luck.

By speedpro56 - 17 Years Ago
Congratulations Charlie, after your initial run bump the timing up to 12 degrees and see if it runs better and doesn't sparknock under load and cranks easy, If it does better then try one or two more degrees to find your engines sweet spot. It really does look great. Congratulations again!Wink

Charlie absolutly beautiful!! What a great job. I too wonder what the horsepower rating would be. Wish I had a better computer for the sound, it comes in bit and peices. Sounds tough as Hell though. i think you need a "break in " trip to Columbus next year.

I'll second that!!!!BigGrin
By charliemccraney - 17 Years Ago
I'm planning to bring it.  Tried to this past year but had a pushrod failure on the way.  It's been running since May.  I have about 1000 miles on it.  It's pretty well broken in but I am still tuning.  It was lean the last time I checked.  I richened it and haven't checked again yet.

Thanks for the comments!

I got some video while driving tonight.  There was a lot of traffic - I even got a cop to follow me for a bit - so I had to keep it slow and below 4000.
