Holley 94 or Stromberg 97 - Preferecnce?

I guess it basically boils down to personal preference but would appreciate options of those who have tried both. I have a Edelbrock 557 on my stock 292 Y-Block. I currently have 97's installed* (which will all probably all will need to be rebuilt), but I have been reading a good bit recently about the Holley 94's as a more streetable/reliable replacement carb.

I like the nostalgia aspect of the 97's, but just wondered if (before I spend the money) getting a set of 94's would give me more reliability, less leakage, etc. Would appreciate you thoughts and shared experiences.



*Technically, the truck is currently running with what I believe is a Rochester carb in the center with the two outboard carbs disconnected but I have a rebuildable 97 available.

The 94 is a better carb because it is more modern. 97's are nostalgia carbs and lots of guys go WOW!! when they see them. Rebuilding cost is probably about the same. I think the 94's, at least the later ones, have a higher cfm.



If you got the 97's, use them although if you sell them you can probably buy about ten 94's with the proceeds.

I think the Strombergs are more for bragging rights. I like the Holley EBU and they are easy to find and easy to fix. I guess about every 55-56 272 had one so its easy to find matched ones. I even use them on my GMCs that have a 3 bolt manifold.

If you use the Strombergs, be sure to regulate your fuel pressure to 3 psi. or they WILL flood.

Also, with either one you have to consider which type of distributor your gonna use. i.e. Load-a-matic or '57 and up. The 'bergs have no provision for vacuum adv. and the 94's have to be modifided to work right with the late dist. (the center one only). 

Triple carbs look cool, but a 4 barrel is the way to go! Wink

Not true... Some Stromberg bases (although rare) had a ported vacuum port...

Swap meets have accessory vacuum plates, or use the manifold.  Also Edelbrock is about ready to reproduce the 94.  I also thing the 94 is a slightly better airflow cfm than the 97.

Selling the old '97's would make a good down payment on the new '97's, not the Speedway model.  The new ones are technically superior to the originals with a few of the internal issues fixed.
