Just a quick hello from a newbie from Australia. Great site ! My current ride is '32 Tudor powered by a triple carbed 272 backed up with a FMX auto. Great fun to drive & creates lots of interest when people realise what's in it . Y-Blocks down here were the back bone of hot rodding during the 60's & 70's and are now seeing a resurgence in popularity. Will post somes pics as soon as I can.

Welcome. I've always been impressed with the work that our friends from down under do.
I'm curious to know the details of your FMX conversion; flywheel, converter, etc.

Welcome to the site . What part of the country do you live ??? Always good to have another Aussie on the team. At one stage we were almost being out numbered by the Canadians ??? Can you imagine that ?? An Aussie being beaten by a Canuck ?? Almost unthinkable ?? Lon

pcmenten (3/29/2009) Welcome. I've always been impressed with the work that our friends from down under do.
I'm curious to know the details of your FMX conversion; flywheel, converter, etc.Paul , my conversion was fairly simple in the end .A friend and I found a rotted out '56 Customline and removed its trans, convertor, drive plate and bellhousing. Two top mount holes have to be drilled & tapped into the bellhousing to accept the FMX (lower ones are the same ). I re-rivited the spring steel dampeners to the 1/4" thick drive plate as they had come loose.I then had a local Auto-Trans repairer modify the '56 convertor by cutting off the original pump drive and fitting an FMX one. This was the only problem I had with the conversion as he didn't get the length right first time. I then had them go through the trans as it needed new clutch pack etc. Trans was a unknown "swap meet special" , but had a shift kit fitted sometime during its life and surprises people when they first ride in the car ( have later found out that the trans was originally behind a hot 351c ). The last mod was converting a Mopar ( cause I liked the look of the shift lever ) shifter to work like a Mustang shifter , but mounts direct to the trans. Thanks for your interest - David

Tom Compton (4/1/2009)
The white headers are SHARP. What coating? TC Headers are coated with HPC ceramic white. Simular finish to the old "Aluminium spray".Unfortunately they need to be redone as the engine ran too lean at first and discolored them (turned certain areas dark gray). I originally chose this coating because I wanted the aluminium spray look but with modern technology (long lasting). It would actually be pretty good if I hadn't run too lean & got hot spots- good for about 1200 deg celcius.

Will post somes pics as soon as I can.[/quote] Sorry they are not in order , but here's a few build shots. These shots only represent probably the last 12 months of the build . I'm ashamed to say that the car actually took 12 years ( but stuff happens )

Welcome to the site "Yblock32"! Just a word of advice though, take everything Lon says with a grain of salt, he tends to give all the "fine, respectable Aussies" on this sight a bad rep!!! Well I guess all families have a "black sheep"!!!! LOL

Might see you there. Regards Aussie bill.Bill ,unfortunately I wont be at Goulburn - other commitments. My brother will be there with his trade stand ( Lilow Autotech). There's no trouble "spreading the faith" in Victoria, there's plenty of Y-Blocks coming out of the woodwork. I'm actually now rebuilding a spare 272 that I had hiding under the bench and recently picked up another 272 for a mate who plans to put it in a '32 roadster. By the way was it you who recently picked up some Offy dress up gear from down near Melbourne? Good luck to you if it was , my mate was trying to locate those bits and buy them back.

When I made them they had look like they could have been made in the sixties and not look like SBC headers. The rest of the system is made from 2.1/4" mandrel bends & tubing. Yes it does sound good ( but I'm biased ) and it also meeets our BS 96 decibel noise test for registration.

My apologies, i couldnt remember those offy parts you mentioned at that time but was reminded when i inadvertantly met your mate who was originally after them, i approached him at the 2009 Hot Rod Nationals at Goulburn on Saturday because he had great Y block V8 emblem on his tee shirt! Spreading the faith!! had great time but 760 odd cars and my A model coupe was Only Y block engine there! despite most folks going to use or thinking about these engines. My old faithfull 312 tripower started to flood often on rear carb and despite clean out still did it, so this week, its carb week! Best regards. Aussie bill.

Spreading the faith!! Yeah Bill , the only reason he's got that shirt is because it didn't fit me and he's been reminding me of it ever since !! He claims that the "shirt" was the hit of the nats. Funny how many people are gunna or wanna do something with a Y-Block , wish I could have been there.Obviously there weren't too many Spades cars there a s they're normally good for a couple of Y-Blocks. Did my mate have a chat with you about the "phase 2" Argentinian Y-Blocks with modified windsor heads?
|
By aussiebill - 15 Years Ago
|
Hi, yes, thats a neat teeshirt emblem, yes, we did discuss the argentine heads, and told him what i knew of the weslake style, my good mate here has the cast iron version of the weslake heads and some bits a pieces of the race engines, all exciting but still lots missing, rocker gear etc which is certainly different to anything. there was a mention of some of our followers finding a set of the windsor style heads, not sure if complete or just ended up on bench. Its great to allways have a holy grail in any hobby to help keep it alive. Best regards, aussie bill.

Hi dave, Thomas covers are scarce and popular and with all of them, dont last long on ebay, I can only suggest keep on checkig ebay and magazines. i got mine years ago. best regards bill.
