I know that Bob Martin does not frequent the site much, but there is quite a bit that he does behind the scenes to help organize the annual Y Block Shootout here in Ohio. Tony Fritz, the overall Fast Fords financier and coordinator, sent me an updated promotional flyer just last week and he also asked Bob and I to meet him on February 1st to review a number of the details. From what we are seeing here in Ohio, the interest from folks here in the midwest is certainly growing - especially among the FE crowd. Hopefully more of our Y Block faYthful can make the race weekend.

for now, here is a jpeg of the details...

See if they can designate a spot for us closer to the starting line.  That walk is long enough that I stayed up there much of the time and had to be strategic about water and food, to try to avoid missing a race.

Charley - will do. I will be sure to bring this up to Tony and Bob when we get together.
If anyone else has anything do let me know.

I would really like to drive up and attend. I have a vacation planned prior to this and it might be more than I can pull together for this old guy. It would be fun to see all the Yblocks together again. It's been too many years.

Whoa!! just checked the mileage! 900+ miles from my area. Have to plan pretty well on this deal.

A couple of goodies just arrived from our man Mummert out west. Not sure if I will be able to have my 312 done in time to run it this June - still waiting on some machine shop work to be done and that takes time. I did drop off a set of G heads with a local machinist this morning. For all the circus show on social media, I did happen to run across a set of headers - these look to be the Jerry Christenson variety. A shop was selling the 292 and the buyer did not want the headers so... I said I would take them. The pictures are what was posted online when I purchased them. Any recommendations on a place to have them ceramic coated?

723 for me. Its rather central anyway and worth the trip. Bring a camper or a tent.

Are any hotels giving any deals on a close place to stay?
By NY59F100 - 2 Years Ago
Hey Daniel,

Thanks for your work helping to get this organized. I’m definitely planning on being there. It was great to run for the first time and to meet and see a great group.

For your headers, try New Image Powder Coating in Struthers, OH. Jim and his brother have been in business for 30 years. I have my rams horn manifolds there right now getting ceramic coated, along with a bunch of other things getting powder coated.

Panel driver, there was a hotel that offered a lower rate. Best Western, I believe. Nice hotel and breakfast. Less than half an hour from the track.

NY59F100,  Thanks for the reply I will check into it.  Is on my agenda to go.

Soffian - I am just trying to help Bob Martin out... he does not get on the internet much these days.

Thanks for the information on the ceramic coating, I will look into it.

Panel Driver - yes, Soffian is right, the Dragway 42 owner says that the Best Western in Wooster has the special rates and all.

Thanks for the input. I booked with the wyndham in seville.   Now if I can just afford the fuel that would be great.

I just booked at the Best Western at Wooster.
They don't have many rooms left for the weekend.

I think less people are spooked by covid this year since it was April last year that I booked the room and there were still some available.
Figure out where you are going to stay and book it!

Where is everyone staying?
By Daniel Jessup - 2 Years Ago
Holiday Inn Express in Wooster - and yes, you are right, there are also hotels in Ashland that do not have too many rooms left!

Is this a guy thing only, or do you folks take your wife along?  Is there anything for women to do?  The reason I ask, I would like to go but the 18th of June will be our 56th Wedding Anniversary, and I would not leave my wife alone for a week during that important time.  Just asking.  Joe-JDC

My wife is retiring in May, this is the 1st year in a while that she can come. Harry’s wife is coming too. We’ll be staying at the track.

A fella at the office helped me design this flyer and I have printed quite a few to distribute. Today at the Columbus Ford Spring Swap meet, well over 100 of these were picked up individually by those who were interested in the event. I am planning to go to the Carlisle Spring Swap Meet at the faigrounds but that is a multi-make affair. I can have some printed for those of you that are going to the Carlisle Ford Show in early June. Of course, if anyone on the site would like some to hand out just let me know and I will gladly mail you a few. Soffian is getting a few of these first - just dropped them off in the mail box yesterday.

Shoot me an email at dan.jessup@hotrodreverend.com

Daniel, that flyer makes my truck look even better than in person! I will definitely be there, attempting to improve on last year’s first ever runs. I’ll be checking the mail. Thanks again!

Just throwing out this idea.
I'm wondering if anyone is passing through my vicinity on the way to the block shootout? I live in Tulsa, OK. I could possibly meet up on another out-of-the-way route if possible. I'd be happy to chip in for gas and whatever it might be worth to you as a passenger and help with the drive (if you trust me!) I'd get myself a room of course. Was thinking of driving my Bird as it's satisfying to have it there, but it's a bit of a slog by myself OR maybe someone would want to share the ride with me.
Just wondering and thinking of ideas.
Also considering flying but from what I've checked so far even that isn't convenient by the time you rent a car to get from Cleveland. Have a new Bronco to drive too, but I'll be leaving that for my wife.

I will be there with my Y block and FE…… hopefully. Our club will have multiple cars attend.

I’ve been working it seems for the last two months replacing the output shaft bearing on the transmission. I got it up and into place tonight, just have to bolt everything back up again.

Update: Bob Martin and I are having lunch with Tony Fritz tomorrow (Tuesday, June 7). If you have any questions or anything we need to bring to the meeting do let me know. I would be glad to carry things along. I do know that a Y Block space has been reserved much nearer the track than before.

Hope to see you there! I know you had some issues last year that kept you back.

Please kept us updated, especially about the Y Block pit space.

Is that the same pit area we had last year?

By charliemccraney - 2 Years Ago
No, that is a lot closer to the starting line.  It looks like it's right at the bottom of the hill going to the stands.

I think we were between the et booth and first exit last year.

Toward Jeffrey Rd.

Dennis, I placed a large red star at the starting line - you can see the color coding for the staging lanes and all. Tony does plan to have the driver's meeting in the Victory Tent so that guys do not have to walk all the way to the tower to have the meeting. Tony is supposed to get me more information this weekend so that we can have a full color handout of the classes, etc, for the weekend. That way, when people come into the gate they have updated information and know what is going on and when. I will do what I can to help. Speaking of helping, I did put a bounty out on Ted Eaton - $50 to the first one to take him. BigGrin Dennis - are you up to it? Cool
By pintoplumber - 2 Years Ago
I’ve only beaten Ted twice. He’s probably got a 5 to 2 advantage. We’ll see.
By bird55 - 2 Years Ago
Man you guys are going to have fun! I wish that I could make it this year. Had folks come to visit unplanned so that's the way it goes. Post many photos and explanations or subtitles for us folks stuck at home.
I hope everyone is safe and goes QUICK & FAST!

Well I hope thing went really well at the Shootout.. Wish I could have been there.. Any summary reports on the competition and turnout?
By Daniel Jessup - 2 Years Ago
Welp, I will start - anything wrong this picture? I mean, other than the Hot Rod Reverend with a rematch against Ted Eaton but this time in the final round... Look real hard and you will find it. It is amazing that the photographer snapped the photo just at the right time. (if you were there - don't tell just yet Tongue)

I will let Vic explain more of this issue when he is able to get on here, but suffice to say he brought a really hot 9 second car and did make some passes. I may have video of one of his runs, and a few other stills. I will have to check. At any rate, he tried to get some parts from Summit on Saturday afternoon/evening I believe and things did not pan out. I will say this, that car was something else!

The trans brake would not work after it got hot from the 1st run and the water pump quit too (ended up being a wire on the pump but we had it out so figured to replace it). Tried foot braking it but that takes the pucker facter out. Larry Short was there and convinced me he would take me the 44 miles to Summit but not in his Thunderbold.😥 At Summit I first asked for an electric water pump for a 71 Cleveland and they had only 1 so we got it. Then asked for the power glide solenoid both looked like the ones we brought. Back at the track the input and output threads were the wrong size on the pump and the threads on the trans solenoid were wrong too. I'm thinking he gave us a solenoid for a Cleveland and not a power glide. Fixed the pump wire and reinstalled it and the old solenoid. Drove it to the trailer and winched it in.. Started it up on Sunday and the car would not move except it would roll in park. It's in Scrub quarantine now and I'm back to driving the White Y-Block Bird.

Here are the final results for all the classes for both Saturday and Sunday.  The air was really good on Saturday and helped my car to top the 150 MPH mark in the quarter.  Congrats to Daniel for making it a final round match up for the two of us on Saturday.  Harry's big 1960 Merc is still a force to be reckoned with as evidenced by his win on Sunday.

I enjoyed every minute of being there for the Shootout and I am already making plans for next year! I do hope Tony Fritz will hold Fast Fords another year. I know that he was not happy with the overall number of racers on Saturday and Sunday especially since the weather was good. But if you folks think it a good track and venue I will certainly encourage him to keep Fast Fords at Dragway 42. Compared to many of you I know very little about drag racing so I do value your opinions on these things.

It was a treat to not only hook up with Ted in the timed runs on Saturday morning but especially to make it to the final round with him in eliminations. I am working on another video of my run against Ted but if you want to see a little bit of my bye run I have a video here:

https://youtu.be/KPKZpioU2kk

My best run of the day was a 16.0044 and I feel like I could have been in the 15's if I wasn't so itchy at the line and burning rubber at the lights. The E4 certainly made the engine pick up quite a bit and I wound up above 5,000 rpm easily for each shift. I did notice that Jim Cochran had a set of drag radials on his car and and what looked to be stock wheels - I would think this is the route I would need to go if I want to maintain a street car that races at the track occasionally. But, knowing me, I will be working on going a little faster in this thing so more modifications or even a swap to the 312 I am building is on the way. BigGrin I just can't leave well enough alone!

It was good to meet David Church. I believe he had some transmission trouble, but I loved that yellow Thunderbird!
