I went racing at Beaver Springs today. I made my 1st pass, and they came to my pit and said I was putting down oil the whole way up the track. I checked my oil and I was down a quart. I drove about 2 hours, 95 miles one way to get there. On the way home I used less than 1/2 a quart. I won’t have time to fix it before the shootout and perhaps not this summer. I don’t mind adding oil while I’m driving. Is there someway of putting some kind of diaper on it while at the track? What kind of material would you use? Thanks for any help or ideas. By the way it would be the rear main seal. Dennis

Yes Sir! Google "engine diaper" and you'll find 'em at any of your favorite high performance dealers. They are required by the NHRA for certain classes. I'm not sure how I feel about running with a known leak, but it's not my decision to make.

Any idea where it was leaking from?
By pintoplumber - 4 Years Ago
Chuck, it’s the rear main seal. I can’t believe it’s as bad as they say. Less that a half a quart in 95 miles on the way home. I would guess some drops every now and then up the track. If I could only catch them.

have a kit for ys,as what I see as most oil leaks are from the rear of the pan most pans have poor clamping due to old age. my kit is a thicker denser gasket, and a plate that covers the rear 6bolts,pressing on raise dimples on the pan.have sold 3in canada 1 in the us.  75 us plus frt. if interested send me your email and I can send couple of pictures.  ay with no leaks is pos.

Meteor, a few months ago, I asked for information in regards to oil-pan-rail reinforcements for Y-blocks. At least one person said that the "bumps" along the rails will not accommodate reinforcements. At least one other person said they aren't necessary. I'm not so sure I agree with them.

I, and possibly others, would like to see a photo of what you have. If it works, you might find some potential customers on the forum.

Thank you.

They didn’t stop to clean the track after me, I can’t believe it was as bad as they say. There was an accident earlier in the day, some guy in a 4 cylinder probe who was doing 142 mph at the 1/8 mile, went into the grass and brushed the guardrail. Don’t know what he would have been doing at the finish, as he crossed the line in the grass. Dennis

Dennis, I wonder if you got blamed for someone else's oil down.  Also, it they didn't clean up the track afterwards there couldn't be much oil on the track.  If you were to install meteor's kit, you would have the pan off, you're only minutes away from replacing the rear seal.  If you don't see a small puddle when you park the truck, I wouldn't worry about it and go ahead and run it at the shootout.

my email is ct1940@shaw.ca,send me yours and I will forward several pictures. I have not mastered sending pictures to the site(yet)
have the system on my mercy (56yblock 4v) no drips, re the rails they are more secure than the bolt holes which are sunk after years of reticent etc
the plates are water cut and very accurate. thanks for the interest. cliff t

I suspect they saw a spot of oil on the track after you took off. Maybe yours, maybe not. If its the rear seal you could use a tie down strap up and over the transmission to hold an old folded towel in the area between the pan and transmission. See you in June!

Yeah, I always have a spot where I park. When I put the G heads on the 239 block, I used a 272/292 gasket kit. The 239 side seals are different, so I reused the old ones.

Dennis, I recall a note in Y-Block Magazine from Jerry Christenson.  He was at a shootout and suffered a rear main seal leak.  He said he "Pampered" his car and was to finish the day's racing.

I kinda remember somebody doing something like that. I couldn’t have told you it was Jerry. I’ll take a look under and see what I can rig up.

To me, a quart every 200 miles is a serious leak

Yep.

That was Jerry C.. He kept a supply of them in his bus to keep the track officials happy

I talked to my machinist today to see who he could recommend without pulling the engine. I’d have to pull the engine to do it and I just don’t have time in the next month. I have a stress test this Friday, so I’m hoping everything goes well.

Dennis, does your truck have a different front suspension/steering system?  On my truck, pulling the oil pan is a piece of cake.  Don't have to pull the engine.  Maybe you don't have to pull the engine.

My pan would come off easily enough, it’s just my schedule in the next 4 weeks is busy. I found a garage that will do it for me, sounds like he’s a Ford guy. I don’t know if they’ll find anything during my stress test, my remaining brother is in the hospital with a leg infection. Just too much going on right now.

I need to find a neoprene seal and 239 side seals for the mechanic.

Dennis, I have a pair of 239 side seals.  Say the word and I'll put them in the mail to you.
By pintoplumber - 4 Years Ago
Thanks John, please send.

Dennis:

They're on the way.  Pony Express.  Wait, that's not the right word.  It's Priority Mail.  Should be there Friday.  I have a tracking number if it is needed.

Side seals came today, thanks John.

Hooray. I got a new rear seal installed. I picked up the truck tonight. A mechanic did it on the side for me. He’s a Ford guy, I saw in his garage a 62’ 63’ 64’ ford. Did they have a 427 in 63? One of them had that engine. One had a 428. His daily driver is a 63 f 100. He really liked my truck, I guess he hadn’t seen many y blocks. See you guys Friday.
