Oh, the results . Times were not what we expected, but there is several reasons to that. yfreak57 drove 16.658 / 129.96 km/h as a best with Hollow Machine and my best was 16.919 with 114.91 km/h. LordMrFord did not attend due hangover .
The engine works great and has a lot's of power with only 0.5 bar boost pressure. Runs almost perfectly at all rpm situations and driving conditions. Well, of course it can do much better with wide band lambda and some more tuning. But when it starts to really pull, the rear tires loose the grip immediately. At my best run at quarter I lost the grip at half way and I had to lift and I drove all the way at first gear. The transmission has seen it's best days and won't take the second gear very often. Sometimes it does, but most of the time it don't. It slips badly. Maybe the increased power does that? Well, it slipped last year too, so we have to change it to something more race oriented version.
At Jyrkis best run it changed the second gear just before the finishing line and that explains that 15 km/h difference at speed traps.
The track was also a bit slippery and our narrow tyres didn't get the best possible grip. And the 60 ft times were at 2.585 to 2.910 range due the two speed tranny and the 2.75 gears.
On race circuit we did some extremely dangerous curves. LordMrFord spun twice, me once and yfreak 57 spun also atleast once. I'll put some videos about those to youtube later .
It's quite a feeling when your helmet starts to lift your head upwards at about 120 km/h speed and when the tranny suddenly takes the second gear when the boost pressures are at the peak level. And then the rearend starts to pull to the left or right when tires loose the grip .
Drive safe!

Bob_Martin (8/12/2008) There have been a few Y-Blockers working on twin-turbo's, but you are already there.-And some of us have been thinking about it. I would love to read about the technical aspects of running a turbo on a Y.

Bob, safety issues are well in our minds but style goes first and a roll gage over our rat rod is out of question. But I think we have reached the limit with that frame and my head (Hollow one) is brainstorming with ideas about Nostalgia FED dragster for the next summer with decent C4 behind that engine. We can always put the old reliable 272 to our Hollow Machine and use it as a tow Machine for the dragster .
And about that story for the Y-block magazine... It could well be done. How much of a story do you want? And how many pictures is possible? We do have a lot's of material for that and previous setups. Too bad, we don't have a clue how these setups work with any full scale car, but basics are the same. And we are no experts in any manner, we just like and dare to try different things .

And there is me driving my fastest lap around the circuit. Despite that spin, I was three seconds faster than yfreak57 with his Country Sedan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isRpNcgJmig
Hear when the revs go up? That is the point where the tranny slips during first to second shift .

What rear end are you running? You need to get a posi or weld up the spider gears. Also try to find some of the sticky Goodyear Eagles about 6-8" wide. The locked up rear end will make a big difference right away. You could make an old fashioned looking single loop rollbar that just poke up above the driver head. Still look like a rat rod (if thats what you like) Chuck in NH (sure sounds good though!)

Does anybody live near this one and could go and negotiate this guy to sell his dragster to Finland ? http://www.racingjunk.com/post/1285707/200-quot-Front-Engine-Dragster.html
Would be interesting to lift our recent set up on that with a powerglide to Y adapter....

That dragster that’s for sale is a bit far from me to check out but there are some other Y-Blockers in that same general neighborhood. Keep in mind that when putting a powerglide behind the Y, it will need to be cocked sideways about 5° to give some room for the upper two transmission mounting bolts. I re-clock my transmissions 5° clockwise (looking from the rear) to raise the transmission shift lever up and out of harms way. The Y and the scrub share almost identical top bolt hole locations but they are off just enough to require reclocking of the transmission. I’m assuming at this point you’re comtemplating building your own adapter.

This chasssis setup is located here in my home town.
There is no phone number on the ad.
Let me know what I can do to help.

Bird55, thanks for your interest! I sent a message to the seller and asked about his adress and number to contact. There was some "get a location" button at the ad, but that map did't tell me anything from here. If he contacts me back and is willing to sell his dragster, could you go and see it for me. Buying and hauling it up here is an another story, but let's not go so far at this point. Have to tell you, I'm on fire about a real Nostalgia dragster .

Ted, thanks to you also. I didn't know that bolt pattern thing, but would this be ok to use? http://www.transmissionadapters.com/Ford%20Y%20Block%20to%20Chev%20install.htm Hmmmm....the price is horrible

One more to show... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dERFLD7s5mE
Damn, if I just had had that second gear working on that run. Until 660 feet it was pushing real hard, but just when I needed that second gear it never did show up... It just slipped till the end!

I’m not familiar with eithter adapter and the pictures of each are not clear or detailed enough to make a decision as to if either is adequate for a performance application. Flywheel and starter compatibility is what I look for in an adapter. Previous experience with another Bendtsen’s adapter has the starter attachment being less than adequate and difficult to service once it’s installed in the vehicle but I don’t know the specifics for the Bendtsens GM tranny to Y adapter as that could be improved.

Ok, Ted. Off topic, what is your best run at quartermile? ET, 60 ft,330 ft, 660 ft, 990 ft and top speed? Our best was that yfreak57's 16,658 seconds, 2,675 7,121 10,516 13,791 and a bit over 80 miles per hour top speed. Feeling was that it pulls quite hard between 60ft to 660 ft but then the shift to second gear destroyes the whole thing...

I think, we can dig a lot more power from engine with wideband lambda and ignition control, but non street legal car is hard to get tuned without a private track.

Hollow Head (8/23/2008) Ok, Ted. To date with the Y in the roadster, the best times are: 60’ 1.278 330’ 3.827 660’ 6.021 @ 111.06 mph 1000’ 7.953 ¼ mile 9.614 @ 135.42 mph Just keep in mind that war was declared on the Roadster’s weight and as such, the finished weight has been trimmed to bare minimum. Even the shifter knob is hollowed out. As an FYI, when I increased the lift on the camshaft from 0.537” to 0.595” with a subtle increase in duration at 0.050” and a ½ point increase in the compression ratio, I picked up almost two tenths in quarter mile et while the eighth mile times all basically stayed the same. This engine is still normally aspirated with a vacuum secondary carb and no power adders. Hollow Head (8/23/2008) Feeling was that it pulls quite hard between 60ft to 660 ft but then the shift to second gear destroyes the whole thing...Perhaps you’re running out of camshaft? Or you’re shifting at too low an rpm and falling below the torque band? I'm shifting at no lower than 6700 rpms to insure that the rpm falls back to the peak torque rpm of the engine. With a two speed automatic, that becomes critical.

so we have no idea how much hp and tq the engine is making??? you know the weight of the vehicle?? i could do the math if i had the weight..lol..i'm very curious to this set-up..and how hard was the install..i woudl love to do this on mine...maybe i should just get a 5.0 so i don't mess the y-block up :'( ?

I've been told by my friend Don who's been building engines for years that the stock 5.0's start splitting blocks at about 450hp. He says it's not if but when. I know there are several Y-s running at at least that power level that hold together just fine. Stock for stock, I think you will mess up the 5.0 before you mess up the Y.

Apache. Times and weight doesn't tell us anything, even if would have scaled the Hollow Machine. Poor starts due 2.75 open rearend and slipping second gear destroyes all calculations. 60 feets were all in 2.5 to 2.9 seconds and when the second gear should have gone in, it didn't and all we could do was trying to make it go in by lifting the pedal and then again press it down again. . It weights about 700 -800 kilos and it has more than 180 stock horsepowers.
Well, now we have a wide band O2 sensor and a JAW controller to help the Megasquirt to uderstand that signal from the wide band sensor. That helps the tuning of the whole system, but i'll be next summer untill we fire it again. In what chassis, how many turbos onboard and with what transmission and rearend is still unknown. We will have a long and dark winter to figure all that out.... Hollow Machine chassis is unsafe at speeds over 130 km/h .
FED dragster, altered chassis, some decent two door sedan ('54-'61) Ford, Mercury or Edsel is in consider, if we just can find one and if we have money to buy one. All help is welcome
Or should we just collect our moneys and put it to dyno and see how and in what rpm / hp level it breaks? Just to see some real hp numbers. Would be interesting too ....

My vote is to definitely put it in a car. Would hate to see this trashed or worn out on a dyno without everyone have the experience of a wild and wicked ride.

I would like to see a dyno sheet. But don't blow it up. Put it in a car afterwards. Or put it on a chassis dyno.

Ok! I just started to write an article about turbocharging the Y for the YBM! How badly do you want to see it on that magazine? And how badly do you want to see some dyno results about our engines power figures? HP estimate is absolutely mystery to me but I'm kinda willing to see it myself too. Ok, it takes about 500 euros to get those results and it may also blow up before seeing any good numbers, but...
So far I haven't found any decent chassis to put it, so maybe it will end up to the dyno shop . Just to get some data for the YBM.
Remember... fear is inside in our head, why let it loose and to stop our craziness .

Seppo. Not sure what there is to be sorry about as the link worked without any editing on my end. I thought at first it was going to be a link of the engine on the dyno but see where it’s some good video of the car and others being raced, abused, and displayed. Thanks for sharing.

Yes Ted, I'm a little surprised too that it worked. I had a severe problem with my old computer and I bought a new one with Windows Vista in it. And it uses a IE as a browser. The old one was using Mozilla as a browser with XP. So, I quess that when I changed my old computer to Mozilla, the links stopped working and now with the new computer and IE they work again. Ok, I spent some time with the old one and got it running too... but as I now have lots of more space in this new one i'll stick with it. But, I have to say that I hate Vista after XP . Am I getting old or what.... And yes, that was a teaser of a full 2 hour version of the Finnish Ford Nationals DVD, witch will be available and ready some where during this month.
