If you run thick oil watch out for this.

Was that shaft still driving the pump, or was it slipping? Was it making any noise?

No, this won't turn the pump anymore, I never heard it run, came to me apart.

Gives a visual for how far the shaft is in.

Why is this related to the use of thick oil ?..

The higher viscosity requires more effort to turn the pump. The driveshaft  is not strong enough to turn the pump w/o failure.

Same thing with the distributor drive, if binding the gear pin is usually sacrificial.

I have seen a shaft twisted like a pretzel.

ARP! (and ascertain correct length and engagement)

I just installed an ARP shaft in my 292.  It's bulletproof.  It's also made a little too long.  You may need to grind the flat end to fit your engine or the oil pump will bind.
