Ok sports fans I found a 292 with a auto trans, came out of a truck maybe.. The number on the trans is 16254 , must be missing numbers ...sounds like 54 would be 1954..

any opinions ..   I can get a good price on it so it can be rebuild .. any idea of cost.. ?

See i do try to keep the history alive ..  please feel free to email me

If the bellhousing has truck mounting ears then it is for a truck.  If it does not have those, then it is for a car.

I don't know how to identify which transmission it is.  If the engine displacement is any concern then use the information here, http://www.ford-y-block.com/technical.htm to identify it.  Don't take the seller's word for it.

I thought as a rule of thumb, no trucks with a Y Block came stock with an automatic. Is that true?

Yes, trucks came with automatics.  Also, if the engine in question is really a 292, then the transmission is probably not a '54.  A 54 truck would have had a 239.  Of course, a lot of parts swapping may have been done over the years.  Interchangeability of parts was a good feature of Y Blocks.

There should be a Ford ID Tag riveted to the Case. U might have to clean it off to get the Info on it. Letters and #'s. Is it Air cooled or does it have Connectors to hook up cooling Lines?

the 56 i had with a auto trans had a remote cooler that had engine watter circulating ,also had a short tail shaft. trans had truck style mount ears on bell housing..other than the case could be no more to overhaul than any other 3speed auto .this was a canadian built f100
