Can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to convert the front park lights to front turn signal lights on a 1956 Ford Fairlane? Thanks.

I thought they already were? They should take a dual filament bulb.

Is there a Turn Signal switch on the Steering Column? The Shop Manual does show wiring Diagram differences between Factory and Dealer installed Turn Signal Setup so I assume some came without Signals installed from the Factory.

I don't remember them coming without the turn signals but it's certainly possible. If wiring a add on unit you may need to change the front bulbs to two filament, two wire types and run wires from the add on switch. Interesting.

The Shop Manual shows two different Wiring Instructions Diagrams. Must be pretty rare not to have any at all? Wonder what Year Turn Signals were Mandatory? There is a NOS Dealer installation Turn Signal Kit on Ebay. Shows all the Contents. Item # 273214818745

In Indiana factory turn signals were required in 1957. I don't know if that was federal law, but would guess that it was.

The above post describes CFR (CODE of FEDERAL REGULATIONS-
Turn signals were mandated by government 1/1/1955 by an INTERSTATE COMPACT making their install mandatory. This would explain early 1956 MODEL YEAR install as being optional on all or low trim levels and the availability of OEM kits to install-add on to early 1956 models.

My truck did not have a turn signal switch in the column when I got it. When I investigated, the collar was not even threaded for the switch screws and they are not stripped. I don't know the history so it is possible that it is a replacement that never had the switch reinstalled but I wonder if there was some loophole where they could be ordered without one.

...hmmph...
This URL shows the turn signals as being optional-

The previous info I posted was found on the net so it has to be true. I just don't understand it ...

I know of a 52 Ford that did not come with turn signals and I had a 55 dodge panel that did not have them from the factory but the trucks probably came later.

If this is a 56 Fairlane, I'm pretty sure turn signals were standard equipment

This may explain the option only availability-
NATIONAL TRAFFIC and MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY ACT of 1966
- https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/president-johnson-signs-the-national-traffic-and-motor-vehicle-safety-act
Though the car companies’ lobbyists managed to water down the safety standards in the final bill considerably, the NTMVSA did result in hardier cars: it required seat belts for every passenger, impact-absorbing steering wheels, rupture-resistant fuel tanks, door latches that stayed latched in crashes, side-view mirrors, shatter-resistant windshields and windshield defrosters, lights on the sides of cars as well as the front and back, and “the padding and softening of interior surfaces and protrusions.” (For its part, the Highway Safety Act required that roadbuilders install guardrails, better streetlights, and stronger barriers between opposing lanes of traffic.)
