Does anyone know if the back up switch for a 54 is the same as the 55-57 with automatic transmission? I cannot seem to locate any info on this. I have a 49-54 Mercury Chassis Parts Catalog. They are not the same as 55-57. The original Part # was 1M-15812-B. 51-54 Mercury. Replaced by B1AZ-7A247-A which was also for 51 Ford. Both of those are available on Ebay. Item # 192090055642 and 162367525493. If You look at the Pictures both Part #'s are on the Box. Also shows how they are different from the later 55-57. Completely different mounting bracket. Now that You have 2 Part #'s you might also check Green Auto Parts and Dennis Carpenter who has a lot of NOS Parts not listed on His Website but a Phone Call would tell You if they have One and Price. You can also do a search on Internet with Part #'s.

Thanks for the info. Come to find out, my exhaust was changed and the pipes interfere with the OEM set up. Still working on an alternative for the switch location.

That's the way they came from the factory. My 55 fairlane only has back up lights when the headlights are on.

On all 55-57 Tbirds the back up lights only came on when the parkng or headlights were on.
One modification is to change the wiring so the back up lights would come on anytime it was put into reverse
Back up lights could be ordered from the factory, not necessarily a dealer only option. When installed by a dealer, they may have been wired differently.

Same as 55-56 Ford? The Backup Lights on mine work without turning anything else on including Ignition Switch or Headlight Switch. How is the 54 any different?

Quote..."One modification is to change the wiring so the back up lights would come on anytime it was put into reverse." That's the simple solution to the problem. Just feed the power from a power source that comes on with the ignition switch instead of the light switch. That is what I heartily recommend. Drivers these days are looking for backup lights and know what they mean. That car is in reverse and about to move backwards if it isn't moving already. This is one case where "keeping it all original" is not the greatest idea. Have to remember that in the 50s many things about automobiles were still getting figured out. I just checked a Wiring Diagram for 56. Power to Neutral Switch does come from Headlight Switch BUT i it is Battery Terminal on Switch. That Terminal is "Hot" all the Time. If Wire terminal to Neutral Switch is on One of the "switched" Terminals on Headlight by mistake it will only work when Headlight Switch is on. Use a Test Light to find the "Hot" Terminal with Switch off and move the Wire feeding Neutral Switch to that Terminal.
